400 is impressive. But how much does the upgrade cost?

    From the article:
In a world of improving battery technology it only makes sense that a battery swap could make a substantial performance improvement. I don't have the technical details but replacing round LiON cells with polypacks would, assuming there are no heat problems, give a substantial improvement.

Think about it this way the lg battery in the volt is about 80% as big in 5 years (gen I to gen II) for the same power. That means in 20 years at the same rate batteries should only take up 41% of the same volume for the same power, or you should be able to get 2.44 times as much energy into the same space. It looks slow year after year, but in 2034 even without major breakthroughs we should be there.

As for price its dropping about 7% a year, and if we can use less cobalt this should keep up for some time. Eventally we should get to $100/kwh and then we will need a breakthrough. Tesla thinks this will be in less than 10 years, but lets say 20. That means a 90 kwh pack in 2034 should cost about $9000 to the car maker (300+ mile tesla) , and fit in the space that a 37 kwh pack would fit today or a 54kwh pack would fit inside the space of a bmw i3.

The implications are that even small batteried hybrids in 2034 will probably plug in. In the space of the prius battery you likely will be able to put a 5kwh battery (less than half the size of the battery in prius phv), and the cost to toyota will only be about $500 or the same or less than the nimh battery is today. The charger and a retractable 120 VAC plug would probably only add $300 more dollars, meaning with mark up toyota would only charge $1300, the motors, inverters, psd, etc become the more expensive parts.

200 mile bevs and 60 mile ever phevs become quite competitive at this battery size and cost.

We saw one Tesla in Yuma during our 400 mile Phx to San Diego road trip. He was probably a Yuma local though. Gotta wonder what the range would be when keeping up with normal 80+mph traffic as well as with A/C on.

really pretty easy to implement, but the problem is cost. Perhaps they have figured out the cost problems, or perhaps they think people will be lazy enough to spend a couple of thousand to automatically plug in. maybe if you are spending a hundred grand for the car the option isn't nearly as expensively looking as on say a volt of a leaf.

This is probably tied to their forthcoming AutoPilot feature.

At the rollout event recently in Hawthorne, Elon said one possibility is for the car to park itself and later to unpark itself (while within private property) and drive over to the owner. While saying this he mused aloud that this would make automatic charging desirable and said he would have some engineers think about it.

According to the page Fotomoto linked, at 70mph, 110 degree temps with AC on, range is 238.
    At 80, I would guess 190-200.
AWD will give you a few more miles, 21" tires will give you a bit less.

The speculation is more braking is regened, so it won't really on a long highway trip. At high speed they are efficient at different rpm, so you will be using a more efficient engine raising top speed.
