There are only two sounds I'm aware of when you start the car.

The first -could- be the brake system pressurizing. It usually happens when you open the drivers door, but it could sound when you start the car, as you press the brake. If your master cylinder is really good at holding pressure it may be at the "almost empty" level when you open the door so it doesn't pressurize, but when you press the brake pedal to start the car it drops below the threshold and the pump starts.

The second is the engine starting. Keep in mind the engine only starts to warm the cat, not to actually power the car (though it can if you insist). It will usually wait 10-20 sec after you put it in "ready". When you back out of the garage etc. you are using electric power only. Pearl S usually pressurizes the brake system when I open the drivers door and starts the engine just as I get her out of the garage. Pearl would hold enough pressure that the pump wouldn't fire at start up, though sometimes it did when I pressed the brake pedal.

The brake system pressurization should take no longer than about 5 sec. and the engine in a cold Prius should shut off after about 30 sec.

To expand on Dave's post ^^^ The delay in the ICE start-up (for me) is directly related to how cold the outside air is --- in "below zero" weather - as soon as I shift to "R", the ICE fires up. If the temp is +20 or so, there is a much longer delay.

I had my first ''rattle'' upon ICE cranking last weekend. I had pulled into the carport in a heavy rain, then temps cooled off considerably, did not crank it for 3 days. I vaguely remember a thread where moisture in the exhaust header was causing this, so did not worry about it. This is the only ''rattle and shake'' upon ICE cranking so far.. Still plenty of factory warranty so no problem at this time.

I've just recently have had some issues with mine when starting. Very rough idle and almost seems like its going to die, but it does come out of it. It doesn't cause any lights to come on. This morning was my second time experiencing this issue. I just hope it doesn't die on me somewhere haha.
