HELP! No dash lights and won't shut off

i think this might be the classic defective mfd.

 

multi function display. the touchscreen with all the controls. there're many threads on it and enough defective units that toyota had a 10 year extended warranty. it has been traced to a bad solder joint on the pc board, but has proven unrepairable. best bet is ebay or a junk yard dog.

My post #10 below, contains two post to Luscious Garage regarding the Combinaton meter problem. Read both to become better educated about the problem. Print the Toyota notice regarding the 10 year extended warranty on this part (link provided by Luscious). This notice will give you ammunition to push back on a dealer, should this problem not be occurring in their presence.

Hopefully your car was purchased sometime in 2005 (expires in 2015) vs 2004 (expires in 2014).

EDIT: Combo meter warranty extension is 9 years. Unfortunately, you are probably out of the extended warranty coverage given your model year (2005 + 9 = 2014)..

 

the mfd controls the features you are finding defective.

 

To shut down the car press and hold for 10 seconds the Power button.

Holding down the power button 10 seconds normally works, but I've had a defective combination meter ignore that, I disconnected the negative ground to shut off the car totally.

 

You are confusing Combination Meter and Multi Function Display (MFD).

Combo Meter = speedometer and gear indicator (P, R, N, D/B)
MFD = big touch LCD screen that shows battery charge status, avg MPG, amount of regeneration, radio station presets, etc.​

10 years was a mistake.

NINE years is the extended warranty coverage Toyota has been providing for combination meters in 2004-2009 model year Prius.
Assuming your 2005 model year was purchased in 2004 or 2005, you are outside of warranty coverage:

2004 + 9years = 2013
2005 + 9 years= 2014​

You can always call Toyota Customer Care (you can Internet search this number or look in your owners/warranty manual), and beg/plead for any assistance.

You should still open the link in my post #7 above, to learn more about the Combination Meter Problem. The link above provides links to two articles by Luscious that explain the problem well and repair strategies they tired. As you experienced now, the combo meter problem is intermittent. However, you are guaranteed that the intermittent frequency will become steady and reliable.

 

Warranties are based on purchase date. Your purchase date + 9years = expiration date.

EDIT: Warranty clock start from first purchase date. If you are second owner, when did original owner, originally buy the car? This becomes the start date, not your purchase date, if you bought the Prius used.

 

Check to see if a door's not latched.

He said that the battery was low. Maybe not, comments said they had a new battery and still had the problem. Then he said to take the heads up display to a Toyota dealer.

Does this only reset the display? I think that this is so. I will still have to see if my dealer will exchange it with a good one, extended warranty.

 

This wouldn't happen if you use ready-mode instead of acc-mode.

By the way, one-handed videos are a torment to the viewers.

 

I am sure I used ready mode (IG-ON) and didn't get a display.

Yeah, those guys don't have a clue of how to run a camera! U Tube has the biggest bunch of clowns you have ever seen.

 

READY mode is not IG-ON, they are two separate states. IG-ON is achieved by pressing the START button twice with your foot OFF the brake pedal; while READY mode is achieved by one press of the START button with your foot ON the brake pedal.
