Toyota’s new Prius model to get record 40 km per liter

    Obviously we can't just use 40km/L (94mpg US) so if we do simple maths...

    40km/L = 2.5L/100km
    32.6km/L = 3.0L/100km.
    1/[2.5/3.0] = 1.227x improvement
    50mpg combined x 1.2 = 61mpg.

    Just strictly using the incremental improvement, that's how I inferred the mpg equivalent. Does that sound like a reasonable guess? Or have I simplified the math too much?

    It sounds reasonable. With the competition closing the gap, Toyota desperately needed to boost the Prius' MPG by a good margin anyway. I would be thrilled if the new Prius got 61 MPG.

    I think the current model prius is rated at 36km/L in Japan...

    Why do you think that a simple conversion is NOT sufficient ??
    I don't understand what your math is really trying to accomplish.
    Certainly not obvioius to me.

    Mileage quotes out of Japan are typically based on their test cycle which is wildly optimistic. The current Prius is rated like 72mpg or somesuch on it so, I think, Tideland is trying to factor that into a US figure.

    Math like that doesn't work with US cycle.

    Prius c (Aqua) was rated 37km/l there yet 50 MPG here.

    We'll have to see how well it does in more aggressive cycle and higher speed.

    The Gen3's rating is ~10% higher than the revised Gen2 rating. Still haven't seen it. Another 10% increase would put the Gen4 at 55mpg.

    The Aqua is rated as 35.4km/L or 83 mpg but gets 50 here. If you scale that against the reported 40km/L or 94 mpg it works out to 57 mpg.

    If you scale the Liftback JC08 vs EPA and scale the new 94 mph result it is 61 mpg.

    I'm amazed if this result is actually confirmed. It would be just a fraction better than a 20% improvement over already excellent numbers.

    I'm a little skeptical at this point. It seems too good to be true.

    @Jeff N, even at 57, that's better than the "10% improvement" reports.

    Or maybe this newspaper report is confused and the new 94 mpg number is based on the old Japanese 10-15 test on which the old Liftback gets about 38/L or 89 mpg. That would be a 5-6% improvement.

    from the article: "resin materials used as much as possible to downsize and lighten the weight of the fuel cell"

    Fuel cell??? Guessing that is a translation mistake, but not sure what was meant. Any ideas?

    I think this is the road to the winning strategy. Taking a technological lead is what made the Prius the most successful hybrid on the market.

    I'll take the same fuel economy it gets now, as long as they add AWD. That's what i want here in the states because there are no other competitors with great fuel economy and AWD here in the U.S. The only diesel awd's are all suv's, and none of the diesels VW offers have awd.

    I read the line market it in the fall.

    Ok...so the reveal we be before then right? Usually a marketing strategy in the fall will involve sales then or right after. IE - why would you market something you can't by?

    Good point. It also says the Prius weighs 1,600kg. It doesn't.

    Something's fishy.
