In California, auto deposits are also refundable, no excuses necessary. I placed deposits at two dealers and was promptly and completely refunded by the dealer I didn't purchase from.

The dealers are a royal pain... Driving to lunch today I passed the dealer where I bought mine and saw a silver one sitting on the lot. I called and asked about Prius availability. I was told that there was a wait-list. Then I called again and asked for a salesperson, I mentioned that I saw one driving by.... oh yeah, I could bypass the waiting list and buy that one, for $3000 over MSRP. Typical.

    Yea, you're getting jerked!!

I ordered my 06 in November, and told them I wanted a January 15 delivery (for 06 tax reasons). I was told that my car had arrived at the dealership the week before the 15th, and that I could pick it up anytime. Then, I was told that the sales manager sold my car to someone else (VIP, for more money?) three days before I was to pick it up. Yea, it frosted me, but at least my sales person was honest with me. The car was re-ordered, and I finally took delivery in early Feburary.

The dealer knows when their special-ordered car is put on the boat, and the date of port delivery. Once the car arrives at Long Beach, the dealer knows within three or so days of when it can be picked-up at the dearship. Barring storms or terrorist attacks (?on a Prius?), there is no mystery on when you should get your car. Unless, they sell it to someone else who offers more money for it!!

Ahhh, the ingidnities we suffer to own this little space-ship :p
