Passenger side wiper...where does it 'park'?

    Happy Monday.

I have a question about the windshield wipers on my '06. Specifically the one on the passenger side.

It appears that the wipers were removed(?) when the windshied was replaced, and now I've noticed that the one on the passenger side doesn't seem to park as low as it used to. But I'm not sure, since I didn't actually pay that close attention 'till now...

On my car, the far right end of the blade is just visible through the windshield when the wipers are off (it sits above that black area around the outside of the windshield that you can't see through).

I don't recall seeing it like that before; I thought it was lower. And I looked at a Prius this AM in the transit parking lot and that one seemed to sit lower. But that's only one car.

Is this adjustable? Is it the type of thing where, if you take it off and put it back on, it goes back the way it was...or does it have to be adjusted after it's reinstalled?

There should be a small dot where the end of the wiper should rest. It might be hard to see but its there. Just look with a flashlight if you have to. The wiper should rest close to or on this dot. As for adjusting it you may have to look in the repair manual or someone here would be able to tell you how.

Wow, I didn't know that; thanks! Can you tell me a teensy bit more about that dot? How do I know what it looks like/it's fairly obvious, I assume...?

I did notice this, what appeared to be a clear bubble in the black part of the windshield, near where the wiper sits, but it looked to me like a small cavity in the sealer from when the windshield was replaced, and not intentional.

I'm not going to fix it myself...I've learned my lesson when it comes to anything near the windshield!!

From what I remember ( cant leave work to go look right now ;) ) the dot is in the glass in the black stuff. It should look like a little hole was made in the black stuff so you can see through. If i'm wrong on this just find a dot on the glass somewhere in the arch of the wipe near the bottom. It should be obvious when you see it.

It should not be in the sealer.

Oh, gosh, don't you even THINK of going out to look...but thank you!

My car isn't nearby, so can't look 'till tonite, but maybe what I was seeing *is* the dot after all.

It's funny how I saw what appeared to be an imperfection, and then assumed that somehow it had to do with substandard work...when it's looking like that's not the case at all!

There should be one for each wiper on the car. 2 for the front wipers and 1 for the rear. the rear might be eaiser to spot. You may want to look for it if you cant find the front ones so you know what to look for.

Very interesting, I had not noticed those before. The front two are clear and the back one is red. On my car the front wipers both park about a 1/4 inch below their respective dots. The rear one parks about 1/2 inch to the left (facing forward) of its dot.

The place that replaced your windshield should readjust the wipers for you. It most likely wouldn't take more than a few minutes.

haha. I was just about to mention the red dot. Ok, so that's the rear wiper, not the front.

And a detail about the positioning... The post that sticks up and to which the wiper arm attaches has splines on it, and the fitting on the arm has matching slots. Like the people who got their steering linkage recall done incorrectly, with the splines mismatched, the alignment is off. The people who installed your windshield can take the arm off again and rotate it down one spline and slide it back on and it should be in the right position.

Well, blow me down (that's pirate-speak, FYI) I went home and checked and -- sure enough -- there were the little dots, just like y'all said there would be!!

And I thought I noticed everything.

The front wipers park pretty much on the dot, maybe 1/8" below it, and the rear is also pretty much on the dot (to coin a phrase)...proving once again that we -- or at least, I -- can't always trust our/my perceptions about how things were before a repair, and how they are now.

Fascinating...I learned something about the car, and myself too.

Uh oh, this is getting too weird...

FYI, the driver's side arm is on a spline, but the passenger side's arm is not. For the driver's side, you'd have to remove the retaining nut and pull the arm off the shaft, rotate it to the correct position, and press back onto the spline. The passenger side is easier, no spline, just loosen the two nuts with a 14mm socket ratchet wrench, rotate the arm to point at the dot, then tighten the nuts. According to Patrick Wong, torque to 15 ft.-lb.
