after shutoff water pump acting up

    When you shut down the car a pump moves water in the engine for a few seconds. Now it is making a grinding sound instead of the usual brrrrrr sound. It seems to keep trying because nothing is pumping. Can I shut down this program? I don't think I need it in my climate area anyway. Is this the unit under the recall I had done last year? Will Toyota stand behind the pump they replaced? Thanks for your help guys!! 128,000 miles 2005 Prius

    No recall pump was inverter coolant pump. This pump is heat storage pump. I don’t think you can just turn it off.

    You could unplug the motor, but that might set the check engine light. If you are in a warmer area, then yes, that whole system is superfluous. Have you changed the engine coolant on schedule? Some have reported improved pump lubrication as a result of that.

    I was hoping it was something I could turn off. I had the coolant changed at 100K. Does anyone know where the pump is at so I could try unhooking it?

    if your in a cold weather area, you need that pump. it might be failing and you need to replace it.

    It looks like there is a relay controlling the pump. It is sporadic in operation. The sound is the relay clicking when in operation. Dealer wants a fee to find so I am hoping someone here has had the same problem and can tell me where the relay is.

    This shows removal of the relay from cowl relay box and jumping it to run the pump

    I opened the relay box and pushed all of them down and now the pump is working normally. It was corrosion on the terminals of the relay. Thanks for your help guys!!

    Anyone know how to get the code to stop appearing for this pump? I live in Bakersfield CA. It's not the coldest climate. After I replaced the coolant flow control valve, I was shorting the pump relay, during the bleeding process, with a multimeter. One lead was attached to the relay terminal and I touched the other lead to a nearby bold, causing an arc. Not my most brilliant move. The pump no longer runs. I don't know if I fried the pump itself or something else. But the car runs fine now. I'd just rather not have to repeatedly clear the code.
    Any ideas?

    Here is my idea: Check the 10A CHS W/P fuse and replace if the fuse is open.
