    Hi everybody!
I just both my prius (2005, 82K) couple month ago.
Last owner told me, that he use mineral 10W30 oil.
I want to change oil and oil filter by myself and want to change it on synthetic oil.
    I have a few questions..
    1. Is it ok, if I change mineral oil to synthetic?
    2. May I use cheap oil filter from walmart?
    3. That type of oil are you recommend? (I live in Oregon)
    4. Should I change spacer in drain hole?
    Thanks!

Mobil 1 has a rebate running through May 31, 2015.

$12 back on 5 quarts or $15 on 5 quarts and a filter.

    1) ??? Not completely sure if the mineral oil will contaminate the synthetic oil. Make sure the engine is warm before draining, to get as much out as possible.
    2) You get what you pay for...
    3) Mobil 1 0w-20
    4) yes, I would recommend it.

Amazon and Ebay sell them cheap.

    Search Toyota part #90430-12031

I'm sure they are available at most auto parts stores as well.

On Ebay 10/$5.63 and free shipping

    Huge difference in Oregon climate...

Wet and wetter in the Willamette valley and to the west...

...or dry and hot/cold east of the Cascades...

I run 0w-20 synthetic in mine

My dealer's service dept recommends 0w-20.

With a synthetic oil, I believe you can run the lighter weight oil without any problems.

Choice is ultimately up to you.

The correct oil viscosity is 5W-30. However since Oregon has relatively mild summer weather, 0W-20 should be OK. If you notice your engine oil consumption increases substantially, then move to 5W-30.

While you are looking for the oil drain plug washers on eBay, also look for the correct Toyota oil filter, 90915-YZZF2. Those are not particularly expensive and are the proper filter for your engine. Here for example is a seller that provides qty 10 of the correct oil filter and the drain plug washers for $45, free shipping:
90915 YZZF2 Qty 10 Toyota Oil Filters with Drain Plug Gaskets | eBay
