The hinge pin on the upper glove box of my 2012 Prius has come loose twice in the past, leaving the upper glove box door dangling and unable to fully close. I still cannot understand how such a tight-fitting hinge pin can drift out so easily. Nevertheless, I simply removed the complete upper glove box assembly from the dash and fixed it myself.

There are some Youtube videos demonstrating the removal process. It's pretty straightforward; it requires removing the dashboard trim pieces surrounding the upper glove box, then pulling out the entire upper glove box assembly, revealing the door's hinges. Both times before I found the little metal hinge pin laying inside the dash, just behind the glove box. I simply pressed the pin back into the door hinge pivot holes and the whole thing was as good as new.

Recently the little metal hinge pin migrated/drifted out of the plastic hinge holes yet again, but this time I cannot locate the pin. The pin (a cheap, rolled sheetmetal pin, approximately 1" long by 1/8" in diameter) must have fallen down into the guts of the dashboard's interior...apparently never to be found again.

The local Toyota dealer cannot (or will not?) provide me a separate part number for this small pin; their parts schematic only shows the entire upper glove box assembly as one unit, it doesn't break down the upper glove box into its individual parts. Naturally, they want to $ell me the expen$ive complete upper glove box a$$embly. Unfortunately, my 36-month bumper to bumber warranty expired one month ago, otherwise I'd let them put in a whole new upper glove box assembly on their dime.

Does anyone know what the part number for this tiny hinge pin might be? Or has anyone replaced this little hinge pin with something else?

You nearly named it exactly. A part like that is called a "roll pin" and they're common hardware store items. (Ok, a typical hardware store may only have a couple sizes and maybe not metric, but if just measure carefully and shop online I imagine you'd find something.)

Thanks. I found an assortment of roll pins at my local Harbor Freight store. One of them should do the trick.

My upper glovebox hinges oddly. I followed the YouTube videos to remove the trim around the shifter, the trim with the cupholder that also goes to the left side of the upper glovebox, the top right vent, the right vent, the lower glovebox and finally the upper glovebox. The pin had fallen out of the left hinge. I found it immediately below in the dash. I aligned the hinge holes and inserted the pin. I thought that it would just fall out again so I invented a way to make it stay forever. I put a solid wire thru the pin and then twisted it together and cut off the excess. The pin can no longer slide out. I made that fix to both sides. The wire doesn't seem to interfere with anything. I've reassembled and all is well.
