@Accordlayingkit let me know if you do end up t-tapping, I'm interested in seeing if that works well. While looking at dashcam pages I came across another post that pointed to one by d2mini #23

    d2mini's 2012 Prius Five Progress Thread | Page 2 | PriusChat

where he installed a Valentine radar detector using some wiring from them with a fuse built in. I'm not sure the size of the fuse, or if it would even work, but was thinking having a fuse might be a safer way than just a direct t-tapping. I will plainly admit i dont know enough about this though, just something to think about. Let me know what you think. Thanks.

I'm not sure, it depends on what you want to do, if you only want it on when your car is running, which is what I ended up deciding, I just plugged it into the power source for two main reasons:

    1) I don't have to T-tap into anything, which probably will take me more time that I didn't want to spend
    2) These gadgets often get outdated quick, maybe after a year or two some nicer version will come out with much cooler feature that I want, so I just want a quick swap without removing and re-tapping... But to be honest, I'm just lazy with these things... I managed to run the wire behind the dash and center console so the wire is not visible.

I think it really depends on your preference in the end, I thought the Homelink Mirror has a constant power supply if I'm not mistaken (I have to check now as I think I sometimes shut the car off before closing the garage door with the homelink... )

If that's the case then you'll be able to record while parked, which is always nice when you are out and about. It looks like you have quite a few cool mods to your car so maybe the added benefits of recording while parked is more beneficial.

My only worry with the monitoring while parked is how sensitive the SOC sensor is, given the small size of the auxiliary battery on the Prius. I don't even listen to the radio unless the car is in the ready mode. As I mentioned in my earlier post, it works great for my son in his Jeep, but that is with two big batteries.

From the one link I posted to d2mini #23, he shows the Homelink mirror with a constant power, a switched power and a ground wire. Although I haven't verified this myself. So you just need to plug into the switched wire and there should be no worries about it draining your battery.

I just bought this to use with my Homelink mirror. It has a 3A fuse and is just a matter of plugging into the connector for the Homelink with the switched wire and ground.

I agree with you about having full time power to the cam running down the 12V, but they sell several different types battery discharge prevention devices (such as power magic pro) which will turn off the cam and prevent the battery from draining below a certain level. On another thread (Itronics ITB-100HD DIY dash cam install (instructions for hardwiring + pics + videos) | Page 2 | PriusChat) ucsmfu had his set up for 2 years with no problems.

Now will draining the battery down to that set level multiple times reduce the lifespan of the 12V is another possibility to consider.
