Does bad smell need regassing?

    Hello All,

I bought my used Prius a few weeks ago from Burrows Toyota in Rotherham in the UK. However the air con smells. It took me a couple of weeks to realise that the smell was from the air con.

I live very far from them (150 miles) and I called them about it and they said they would be willing to pay for a sanitisation if another dealer does it for £20. They wont pay more than that and are not keen on doing it themselves because of the distance. The fault is theirs for selling it with a smell.

My local dealer said they only do sanitisation with a regassing for £50. I have asked the Burrows dealer if they would accept this and they don't respond to me. Some junior staff just says the service manager will call back, but they never do. I emailed a complaint to Toyota, and they said the manager of Burrows should contact me, but it's been a week with no contact.

I can't keep waiting until they sort things out. I know of a dealer about 40 miles away who would do a sanitisation for £15, but they recommend the regassing too to get rid of the smell.

My question: Should I pay £15 for a sanitisation or the full £50 at my local dealer for a regas too? Is it true that the smell may not go away if I don't have a regas?

Also I noticed that the side of the door has rust and the brakes make a metallic grinding noise at slow speeds. Is this covered by the one year warranty?

    Thank you.

If the air conditioner produces uncomfortably cold air when the temperature is set to MAX COLD and the fan speed is on high, then the system does not need refrigerant recharging. It just needs to have the evaporator cleaned to get the mildew removed.

Thanks. It does not produce air that cold on the "low" setting. It's just cool air. I believe the low setting is the coldest.

Sounds like you need the full service then including having the refrigerant recharged. However the fact that the refrigerant is low probably means that the system has a leak which needs to be found and fixed.

Romario, Email the dealer where you bought the car from telling them the AC does not work correctly and needs re gassing along with a sanitisation.
Tell them you will give them 14 days to respond after which point you will get the work done. You will then take them to the small claims court for the cost of the work and any out of pocket expenses (could be car hire costs). Also tell them you are sending a "cutesy copy of the email to Toyota".
You could also mention that you have been in touch with "trading standards", and that they are interested in the results.
I guarantee that will bring results.

Assuming that is what the term "regassing" means.

The fact that mold or mildew is growing inside the duct work has no connection to the refrigerant charge......or lack thereof.

How old is this used vehicle ??

Could mould be growing on the AC's cooling fins, reducing its effectiveness?

You can DIY check the system's state of charge, by watching the sight glass while the system's running. There should be just occasional fine bubbles, then a swirl of bubbles, just when it switches off.

Any good pics on the mildew removal procedure? I had the Toyota cleaning (just a teargas-like canister that they throw in the cabin and charge you 50€ for, does NOTHING to get rid of the smell).
A new active carbon filter also didn't help.

I'm pretty sure that Toyota has a "recommended" procedure......maybe more than one......and THAT is not one of them.
You need to "encourage" your dealer to look into it closer.
I suspect it is not a real common problem where you live.

Did they at least check the AC drain hose to be sure it is not plugged up ??

    No... Not that I saw.

And this Toyota dealer, throwing in 10W40 oil claiming it is what Toyota NL recommend is still 1000 times better than all my local Volvo dealers (~5 in a 30 mile radius) that I have handled my V70...

Thanks everyone for the replies. My local Toyota dealer cleaned out the aircon system using their foam 3 times. The third time they spent 40 minutes sucking out all the moisture before applying the foam. I must give them praise for not charging the 2nd and 3rd time. They only took £50 the first time, which the dealer I bought the car from agreed to pay (however that was after sending a few emails to Toyota themselves).

The smell has returned again! The local dealer said that a evap core replacement will cost over £1000.

Toyota told me some weeks ago (before the 2nd and 3rd cleaning) that they can't force the issue with the dealer I got the car from because bad smell is not covered by the guarantee. But this smell is very bad for my asthma. What should I do now? Should I ask for a refund?

I put in a new filter. There is a smell from the tubes but it is different from what comes from the air con.

I will have to get both sorted.

Could I realistically ask for a refund?

For the purchase. The seller agreed to pay for the AC service. So I will send the bill to them.

I just feel like it's going to be a hassle and they will refuse.

they probably will. why not tell them you're returning the car unless they pay for the a/c to be fixed?

OP bought the car in April and it is now August. It would be highly unusual for a car dealer to accept cancellation of the transaction four months later.

I have been trying to have it cleaned by them over the weeks.

What is the law on this?
