As I see it, my other option is a proactive replacement of the battery pack. What I'd really like to do is continue to drive this car with as little maintenance as reasonable until the 2016 Prius comes out. But safety always comes first.

I think that would be rather silly, especially if you are considering trading cars in 4 to 6 months.

My guiding principle is: If it ain't broke, don't fix it. (And a slightly different version that is not family friendly.) :)

One important note, before you go replacing the entire battery pack, the prius battery will only operate at the level of the worst cell in the pack. Let's say all the individual batteries are operating at normal levels except for 2 cells. The battery pack is only as efficient as those 2 bad cells. Therefore, you should only replace those 2 bad cells, rebalance the battery pack and you should be good to go. Unless you want a warranty, then replace the entire pack. But if you breakdown, you will still be SOL whether you replace one cell or the entire pack. The only benefit is if you buy the pack from Toyota then you can be towed or limp to the nearest dealership. Frankly, it doesn't make sense that Toyota priced the pack replacement so that it's equivalent to the price of a used prius today. They are almost telling you to buy a new car instead, of repairing the battery, which defeats the purpose of having a car that uses renewable energy from an ecological standpoint. I would drive it, fix individual cells as necessary and enjoy your ride.

Hi Jeff and welcome to PriusChat.
... this will not be an issue for at least 8 years, or more likely 10+, just like the pack that shipped in your car originally.

Comparing a new pack to a rebuilt pack is like comparing apple to oranges.
