Screen on video display

    We attached a gps monitor to the display screen for a drive to Florida. After removing it, we could not change the temperature setting up or down. There's only a scratch on the display screen where the gps unit was attached. The All Star Toyota dealership just quoted me $7,000 to replace the screen to fix the problem. I don't believe this is what is actually needed to correct the problem. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks.

    Did you actually suction or use adhesives to mount the GPS to the touch screen? I would suggest using your steering wheel controls for the time being.

    Daniel, yes we used the locking clamp on the back of the gps to attach it to the screen. Now we can change the settings on the bottom half of the screen but not the top half, above the circular scratch where the clamp was attached. Your solution is brilliantly simple. Since it's my wife's car, I'm not familiar with what controls are on the steering column. Thank you! Of course, nobody at the All Start Toyota dealership thought to suggest this when I told them that I was sure there was a solution to the problem that did not cost $7,000. Much appreciated.

    Glad to provide some help. In the future I would highly suggest not attaching anything to a touchscreen (pretty much never touch/press to hard on any screen much less use it for a mounting surface). With the suction cups you most likely fractured/detached the digitizer layer of the touch screen. If you break the circuit across the display's touchscreen by applying too much force then you will see a failure similar to what you are describing. Sounds like you have lost touchscreen functionality on the top half of your screen and the only "fix" is to replace the display which pretty much comes in one giant piece and that's why they are quoting $7k.

    If you decide to get it replaced used ones from the salvage yard aren’t that expensive. Or you can get the fixed one. Normally they only have solder joint problem, not the touch screen problem like yours.

    It looks like refurbished displays are around $500 on Amazon and eBay and you could probably find one cheaper from a salvage yard. Replacing it takes a bit of labor disassembling the dash, but a reasonably talented DIYer can do it. It's easier than replacing the radio. It also sounds like the correct price from the dealer. MSRP on new displays is around $7K--wow! I'm gonna take good care of mine from now on.

    7 grand?
    order one off ebay for under $200 and follow the video on you tube under replace prius mfd.its a 15 min job .. you need 2 screw drivers and a 10 mm socket
