Name that Odometer!

    The photos are taken of the engine air filter and tyres from the manufacturer. Car was bought Dec 2012 and lives in the US Southwest mountains. Driving style is not aggressive and most of the miles are highway. I strive to check tyre pressures monthly and set the front to sidewall max rated, rear tyres 2 psi less.

    HUH? Not sure why we are naming your odometer? But I would guess you have 26,000 miles on this car.

    Thanks for playing folks

    70k miles.
    I'm going to replace the tyres towards the end of the year because of the sidewall cracking and for extra winter performance, but in a milder climate 100k miles does not seem a stretch.

    Yeah, was going to say: those tires look knackered. Tread depth "ok", but they look like they washed up on a beach.

    My Bridgestones were just replaced at 105k and were still legal. Went with Michelin for a better ride and grip.

    Michelin recently started selling the 'crossClimate' tyre in Europe that I would love to try but so far is unavailable in the US. Since I have a pretty new Michelin Defender on one corner already, I'll buy three more Defenders if the crossClimate is not available by November.

    At 70k that's got to be a rear tyre, how many sets of fronts have you replaced ?

    One tyre was replaced a few months ago due to a puncture. The other three look the same

    As indicated above, my Prius v OEM Bridgestones went 105k miles or 169k meters and still had acceptable tread (but it was time so I changed to Michelins). They were rotated about every 10k miles.

    Wow, we must have different rubber compounds here in the UK. I thought mine were doing ok, being down to 4-5mm at 22k miles of gentle driving, with +5 p.s.i pressures, rotated at 12k miles.
    Most euro cars are lucky to get 40K miles out of a set of tyres, I think I might get 50k.

    I have heard of some people only getting 50k miles on the OEMs. Where I live it's almost all good asphalt topped roads and very few potholes.

    Maybe OEM tires tend to have older manufacture dates: were oldish when installed on the car, then sat on a lot for protracted time.

    Not sure if this would accelerate wear, do know it increases micro (and not so micro) cracking.

    Conventional wisdom, I believe, is that wear resistance may improve with age, but skid resistance on wet pavement worsens.

    We're a case in point: our's was manufactured in Aug 09, and we bought in Nov 10. But the tires were manufactured (I learned, once I learned how to read tire codes), 5th week of 09. So when we rolled off the lot the tires were 22 months old. I think it helped they lead a sheltered life, and continue to: the car stored at the dealership under cover, and is garage stored with us.
