Can I found out the GPS clock time?

So my Prius has this GPS with a built-in clock that's accurate to within several nanoseconds. And below it is the built in digital clock whose time I have to set myself. It sure would be nice if I could use one to set the other. (It would have been even nicer if one set the other automatically, but that's another thread.)

Every other GPS I've owned has a screen that shows you the current time. [All can show GMT. Others can show local time, too.] I can't seem to find any such functionality in the Prius Nav system. Is it hidden somewhere?

Not really. That post is about how to send the correct time zone. I just want the GPS to tell me what time it is right now.

The closest thing that I can find on the Prius is that it will tell me what time it thinks I'll arrive somewhere. I could set my destination as being a couple of feet from where I am now and see if it'll tell me what time I'll arrive there. But there's a really accurate clock in there waiting to be let out.

Actually I did say in the other thread that there's a "Set GPS Clock" button, but it's in the Service Menu that the 2006 owners can't get to.

1,600th post. Just about 1 post for every 10 miles I've driven in the Prius.

It is UTC - Coordinated Universal Time, not GMT. You can easily obtain UTC for any time zone by going to www.time.gov. It is "UTC", the French abbreviation, because the French got there first. You can also listen to WWV (shortwave) and obtain the current time in UTC.

Wikipedia and the US Naval Observatory both disagree with you. GMT and UTC are colloquially identical (but UTC is considered more scientific.). The British were way ahead of the French. Which country had the big navy and needed to know time accurately in order to determine latitude? The French actually tried to make Paris the prime meridian, but were mostly ignored.

And Wikipedia also claims (to my surprise) that UTC is not a French acronym. UT is Universal Time. And its variants are UT1, UT2, UTC, etc.

Alas, my Prius doesn't have internet access yet. And GPS is more accurate than NTP, anyway.

Sorry. I missed the part about the Service Menu. Alas I can't get to that.

And congratulations on your 1600 postings and 16,000 miles.

OK, I figured out how to do it. I know it works in the 2005 and I understand it works in the 2006.

I don't have any pictures, so please bear with me. Whenever you press the "Display" button it overlays whatever was originally there. Sort of like the letterbox version. Remember that. Think of it like this:

    _____________________
    "DISPLAY" information

    _____________________
    X

    X_______________
    "DISPLAY" information

    _____________________

There's a service menu you should be able to access. Here are the steps (works in either READY or ACC):

    1) Press "INFO" button.
    2) Press "DISPLAY" button. Notice that the MFD is split into thirds. This next part is done entirely in the middle third.
    3) Press the upper left corner of the middle third (look at the Xs above)
    4) Press the lower left corner of the middle third (look at the Xs above).
    5) Repeat steps 3 & 4 two more times. That makes a total of 6 presses.
    6) You should see a service screen come up. If you leave it there, you'll see some checks run and an "OK" show up in about 5 places. That isn't important, but at least you can see what's happening.
    7) Press the "MENU" icon on the upper right corner of the MFD. That brings up the main menu.
    8) Press the "NAVIGATION CHECK" icon. On the 2005 it's about the middle of the MFD.
    9) Press the "GPS INFORMATION" icon in the upper left corner of the screen (at least that where it is in the 2005). That screen shows what satellites you're picking up and TA DA, in the lower right is GMT.
    10) To return to the regular screen, you either power down or hold the "DISPLAY" button for a few seconds.

    Hope that helps.

    You are most welcome. :)

I hope it works. I didn't discover that; it was the first hidden screen I was shown. In fact, when you're in the main Service Menu, do a repeat of touching the top and bottom left corners of the MFD (the whole screen this time) adding a seventh press in the lower right. This should take you to yet another menu.
