A local PCer had his 04 Prius hit in a nearly identical (as far as I can see visually) way, and the repair shop was able to make it good as new. I was very impressed by the work they did - looks great!

(it did take them a while, but I suppose it's results you want, and not speed - and this was when the 04s were still quite new, so getting parts took a while, which shouldn't be a problem now).

You may want to see what the insurance company is offering and take the money. I think you'll be able to buff that right out with a couple tubes of Grannies Wonder Buff compound. The nick in the back is a little deeper, so you'll have to spend a little more time with it, but overall, I think it'll come right out....

Glad you're alright and it wasn't a harder hit than it was...

It will be interesting to see how many thousand was spent on that 2 seconds of mistaken pedal identification.

Few years back some old guy pressed the accelerator instead of the brake and ran down some people at the street market in Santa Monica. If we had any sense at all, there'd be real driving tests, and they'd be repeated every year or three.

man sorry to hear about your Prius. ok i admit to knowing nothing about the nissan but its got to be an suv by the looks of the accident since its bumper completely cleared yours. sure it wasnt a suv revenge attack??

but a good thing out of this MIGHT be possible. not having the bumpers line up looks worse but may have saved the frame. body parts are relatively cheap to frame damage which in most cases, cannot be repaired.

all these accidents are making me nervous. up until the 4th, i had no collision coverage on my Prius. but hearing about all these accidents is making me nervous. (april 3rd is when 3 tickets dropped off my record making my rates 70% lower) so i added a $250 deductible package. hopefully, that wont hex me into getting into an accident.

They've tried that many times here in Florida, but hte friggin AARP is such a large voter population that any such measure gets shot down immediately. Any attempts to get a license away from a 90 year old is unreasonable to them, even though he can't even see the front of his own car!

As far as the car is concerned, you have a right to choose any repair shop you want. Every insurance company has its "preferred" repair shops. All that means is that hte shop gets more business and the insurnace company gets a cut in the prices. You scratch my back...

Don't fall for it. SOme insurance companies are better than others, so feel it out. First get the estimate from their shop, and ask what parts they'll be using, then get estimates from one that the dealer recommends. Better yet, use your dealers shop if they have one.

THe insurance compnay cannot prevent you form using an actual Toyota repair shop.

My guess is thats totalled. I certainly would fight for it to be totalled if it were my car.

But everyone else is right, you have the right to go to any shop you want, and they MUST use OEM parts if the vehicle is less than 7 years old.

Nothing's final yet, but the verdict is tilting toward "totalled". I expect to hear from the insurance company early next week.

If it is totalled, does anyone know what method they will use to value the car? Any idea what information I would need to double check the value they arrive at? It's a 2006 with just 2000 miles.

It's official, the car was totalled

The hidden damage was massive, including a buckled cargo floor and a smashed hybrid inverter. I've accepted a settlement from the insurance company that took into account the car's newness and low milage.

My next car? 2006 Toyota Prius, of course.

Thanks to everyone for their help and good wishes.

So sorry to hear that the verdict on your still-new baby was "totalled". Hopefully the settlement will help cover, if not entirely cover, the cost of your replacement 2006 Prius.

If you are willing to share, how did the insurance company come up with a value for you? If your purchase was this year, how was the value of the tax credit taken into account?

In Washington State, the insurance company is required to determine how much it would cost to replace your car with a car of the same model year, with similar milage and similar options, that can be found in your zip code. Then the insurance company must add tax and license fees to that figure, including all sales taxes. (There's no income tax here so the sales tax is high)

They told me they use an outside company to contact car dealerships and seek quotes, then they average the quotes to come up with a settlement offer. For mere mortal cars, this usually generates dozens of quotes so the average should be pretty accurate. But since there are very few used 2006 Priuses for sale, the initial survey included cars with far fewer options than mine. When I pointed that out, the insurance company ordered a new estimate. I was satisfied with the new estimate so I didn't ask for details, I simply accepted their offer to pick up the check immediately.

Because the state requirement is to replace a used Prius with a used Prius of similar value, the federal tax credit is not taken into account. (Not directly anyway, but since the credit may tend to drive up the price of new Priuses, it may also drive up the price of used Priuses)

Details of the requirements and alternative methods of valuing cars can be found at the web link below.

One interesting question: If I use the insurance money to buy a Chrysler (heaven forbid) am I still eligible for the tax credit on the Prius I bought new, but no longer own?

Sorry about your car being totalled. Hopefully your settlement will cover almost everything for your new Prius.
