Clarify? Are you saying that Prius owners can expect to get smog inspection notices in the near future? :( In the past, they couldn't even do them on the Prius if they wanted to, since the smog test equipment didn't have the ability to command the engine control computer to force the gasoline engine to run at the specified RPM. There would be the same issue on pretty much all hybrids.

Yes you can expect one in the mail when your registration is due.

The smog check machines are different now, they just need to be plugged into the OBD port to check for compliance.......actually just a way for California to get your money.

Got a notice for my car that's due August 2015

the reg's I read say although this is true (testing & OBD port) , your hybrid vehicle has to be at least 6 years old before the hybrid will be tested. So that would make sense you got a notice, since your hybrid is now over 6 years old.

looks like instead of going as a separate bill, it got rolled into the overall transportation appropriations bill, AB 95, which was signed by the governor today.

Looks like the limit was raised from 70,000 to 85,000.

When is the increase effective? Since it was rolled into an appropriations bill, it may be immediate.

I guess this thread has pretty much become moot, since the increase is now effective. Until the HOV decals (green AND white) are cancelled due to the congestion clause. :(

I think they'd cancel the greens before the whites, if it came to that.

agreed - especially now that Toyota has their hydrogen fuel car set up to receive white stickers . . . that seems to be their main concern - rather than expanding the Pip to non-CARB states. But I still hope I'm wrong.

So it sounds like they are playing catch up, getting some of the older cars in as they come up for renewal? That will keep the smog check guys busy. I have a guy I have taken my other two cars to for years. I will have to see if he has the new software. Thanks.

    this is the implementation wording

    • April 2015: The Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) will begin mailing registration renewal notices requiring a Smog Check to hybrid owners for registrations due in July 2015.

I am waiting for them to to figure out a way to require smog inspections for BEVs. After all, these are the same folks who figured out how to collect sales tax on the full retail price of cellphones: they ruled that you actually WERE paying full price: part at the time of purchase, and the rest as part of your monthly fees while under contract, so you owed tax on the entire amount.

They will once they implement a tax on the miles you drive. The smog stations will verify your miles driven.

When the miles-driven proposal is brought up, the issue of "what about miles I drove outside the state; you shouldn't be a able to tax that" comes up. So the answer is: just put a GPS recorder on your car, so the state can track where you are driving. Somehow that rubs privacy advocates the wrong way.....
