Phone Book Transfer?

Quick question, what's your cell phone carrier? If it's Verizon you'll have a problem as they've diabled OBEX (more importantly OOP).

Well, you have a 2006 so you can enter numbers in manually. After that there's a couple of solutions. One is to use a laptop with BT to send the phonebook. The other is to get a cheap (via eBay) non-Verizon BT phone and use that only to send the phonebook.

 

No matter how you do it, I've found you can only transfer 1 number at a time, so it's a major pain.

That's because they don't think it's an issue.

Verizon disabled parts of the bluetooth stack intentionally. So, to them, it's a feature, not a bug. Really annoying. Your only option on Verizon if you want to upload the phonebook from the phone is to buy that Nokia phone. It can do it. Or, you can hack a RAZR to do it, but it's one number at a time, so it's of limited usefullness. Not sure if the Nokia can do the whole phonebook at once or not.

The other options I know of are as follows:

1) If it's a 2006, type them in on the MFD. I like this better than using the phone keypad anyway, so I was disgruntled that I couldn't upload the contacts FROM the car.

2) There was a program posted a while back that would copy the phonebook from Outlook into the car via BT. At least you could use a computer keyboard to enter them in. And, some phones have software available to sync the phone to Outlook, so it can be automated. I know Motorolas can do this.

3) If you have NAV on an earlier model (I think you have to if you have BT) you can enter them in as POIs. There is a thread on here about that. Not sure how well it works in practice, I've only read about it.

4) Get an older phone that can do it from ebay etc.. You don't need the phone service active to do this, the phone just has to be able to access the menus.

That's what I do, but it's a five-step process (abeit short steps) and it's most effective when you have a 2005 as you can do the NAV override.

This is for making calls from POI entries and is best if you have a 2004-5. I assume you know the NAV override sequence.

This is easy for me as any place I call has a location. I put them into the POI area of the nav system. Once that's done and the NAV override is active.

1) Press DEST
2) Scroll to the person/place you want to call and press it.
3) The map will come up with the name at the top with an INFO icon. Press that.
4) Information about that place will come up, plus a Green phone icon.
5) Press either the icon or the button on your steering wheel to start dialing.

The alternative is if the icon is already on the map (or there by easy moving the map around), touching that will bring up the INFO icon.

This works for both POIs you've put in and ones in the database. I used that last weekend when I needed to call a restaurant to check on something.

if it's an LG8100 it will not transfer. I had to call LG to find this out.

try calling your phone's tech desk.

otherwise have your most important contacts call you while in the car and you can save the incoming #'s.

 

I too am a happy new owner of an 06 Prius with Option Package #7. The Bluetooth is working great, except I am only able to transfer one number. When I try to transfer a second, the Transfer Failed message appears. I am using a Sprint Smartphone running Windows Media 5. Anyone else have similar experiences? I am guessing unless I figure out what the problem is, it will be a manula input for me.

 

The program that someone referenced is called Auto Phone Ripper. It enables you to convert your phonebook from individual vCard files into one, thus allowing you to transfer your phonebook all at once. I believe that you have to have your contacts in Outlook, but you should be able to import them into Outlook if you haven't already. I use the program, and it works very well. I just upload my phonebook from my phone via Bluetooth, but if your phone doesn't have Bluetooth file trasfer capability (e.g., Verizon) you can do it with a laptop or PDA. I also know the guy who wrote the program from when I was a grad student at Brown.
