i went with the really big 66" bars so i could fit 5 kayaks plus a roof box on there! i had to mod the roof box so i could open the hatch all the way, i placed my kayak all the way on one side so when its just the one the hatch still opens, when i have more kayaks give up that ability.

Got my Thule 4 bike rack put on for the first time. I love the fact that I can open the hatch without moving the rack. I only plan on carrying two bikes and a Burley trailer but I had no issues on the first run.

Excellent setup. I was wondering how you bolted the SmartBin to the carrier mesh. Did you need to drill through the bottom of the SmartBin?

Did I order the good stuff rack people?

Pro-Series 63120 Eclipse Black 2-Bike Hitch Mounted Bike Carrier ($74 from Amazon)
CURT 11276 Class 1 Trailer Hitch, Pin and Clip ($83 from Amazon Warehouse)

This is for my 2012 Prius Three and two steel tubed street bikes (Jamis Coda Femme and men's Coda Sport).

Also ordered a Tekton 1/2" torque wrench to get it up to 85-86 ft/lb (that's the recommended torque according to several Amazon reviews, though it doesn't seem anyone can find an official recommended torque from Toyota) for another $39.

Around $160 total for the rack and hitch installed, great!

Edit: completed installation and it was as easy as everyone suggests. Here's a video from etrailers' install which I used as a guide.

I found the Curt pin and clip are more secure feeling than the pin and clip that came with the Pro-series bike rack.

I was able to avoid any need for lifting the car or putting it on a ramp by just backing it to the top of our flat garage floor that leads to our steep downhill driveway - left plenty of room to work and get under the car to unhook the exhaust support closer to the front of the car. Used a tool box to support the hitch while lining it up and pushing it into the plastic on the driver side; once the first bolt was started the rest was easy enough.

I need a "cheap as possible" setup for a hitch mount everything carrier and yours looks awesome. What brand hitch is that, and did it mount okay without having to cut anything under the bumper? Thanks

Sorry I came into this conversation late and can't tell which hitch you are talking about. I need a hitch I can trust to take weight and can be installed by my "handy guy" friend. Could you please tell me which hitch you are referring to, and where it can be obtained? Thanks!

What brand hitch is this? And what brand cargo carrier mounted? Looks awesome. Is the under panel part of the bumper, or separate?
    thanks

Got a Prius for mileage, not sailing...Hitch setup costs about the same as a good rack. Cargo box stores out of the way in the garage using a receiver and pulley system.

Anybody using a Saris roof rack on their Gen III? I have 59" wide load bars which are sitting in my garage gathering dust. I'd like to use them since they are easy on/easy off. I have no idea which clips I would need, since Saris discontinued the rack around 2009 and their fit guide doesn't cover the Gen III. Any help would be appreciated.

UPDATE!!!: Should always check before I ask! Went out to the garage, dug out the rack, and found that the the config I already had (59" bars #902 and #24 (I think) clips) works very well - rack is perfectly stable! I will be using the rack only occasionally, so the Saris system works best - takes 5 minutes tops to install or remove the rack. I know lots of people will say to simply fold down the backseat and throw the bike in the back, but I have infant and toddler seats installed, and some of you know how wonderful it is to put those in... o_O Anyway, here's a pic, and hope this info helps someone!

I've had no problem in my home state, even during multiple contacts with law enforcement while providing support for major cycling events.

But apparently it is an issue in South Dakota, where I just collected written notice. Either that, or the SDHP officer just wanted an excuse to quiz a Washington State driver about how marijuana legalization is going. Patrol officers in some other states are reputed to have expressed similar interest.

For future long trips with this arrangement, I should find a license bracket that will attach to the back of the rack.

A view of my rack from a somewhat different perspective.

(It's a Yakima round bars + Control Towers system mounted w/Landing Pads, and accessorized with a few Windjammers. Roadtrip/camping/snowsports loads are handled by the Skybox 12 shown here, and bikes are carried on a pair of Viper mounts.)

Depends on what you want to carry. 48 is fine for 2 bikes, but you might want 58 for 3 bikes or 2 kayaks, etc.
