@mertechperformance Yeah, just looked at their programs. That won't work.

But thanks to everybody who has thrown advice my way!

I'll probably be going with AAA since it's the cheapest. I'll keep looking. A year and a half until I turn 25. -_-

All these age restrictions are so annoying.

    23 is a di
23 is a difficult age to be. It was when I was there too. The rates you quoted are extraordinary in any case.
It sounds like your record may also have been blemished by a ticket or two, a fast car or two, OR from living in a part of the country where it is enormously expensive to repair a vehicle.

    MY ADVICE IS:
TAKE A RECOGNIZED DRIVERS ED COURSE: I got 15% off of my insurance, after I did it during high school,
SLOW DOWN: For me the point of pleasure driving got to be the joy of doing it, not the speed at which it was done. There are drag tracks for that. If you set a rule for yourself of driving 5 miles an hour under the posted speed limit, that will stop being an issue. More importantly, It will decrease the pressure you may not realize you are operating under when you drive,
EXPECT THE WORST FROM OTHER DRIVERS on the road: They wont disappoint you.
When I was LEARNING TO RIDE a motorcycle, they taught us not to drive the same speed as the rest of the traffic. That way you could save your life, from the person next to you who would later claim in court, "I never saw him," before he ran you down. If you are more deferential, by letting other motorists cut in front of you, you can more easily control your options. when you need to execute THE "ESCAPE HATCH" OPTION.
Most importantly, MAINTAINING DRIVING DISTANCE between your front bumper and the car in front of you is critical! (At least 1 car length/10 mph of speed six IS standard) This is true whether you are having other drivers cutting in front of you or not.

Lastly, after my death defying motorcycle accident in 2004, the bike was totaled and I bought my first PRIUS. Because it had all the electronics in it to get the best mileage, I made it my job to maximize my MPG by slowing my driving down. The good news was, with all the traffic lights between my house near NH and my work venue in Boston, slowing down did not make any difference how long it took me to get to work, since I met the rest of the jokers who had passed me going down the Interstate at those stop lights.

@Brutsie2 I don't have any tickets. Thank you. I'll look into a course that gives discounts.

The reason why insurance is so high is because you just got your license. (No driving history)

What you should have done is got your license when you were a teenager, but too late to do that.

    The only 2 suggestions are:

Do NOT buy a Prius, buy a junker or old car. Since this will be your first car, you are going to beat it with dents and dings. That is what is going to happen and you would not want to do that to a nice new Prius.

The longer you drive/practice with that beater car, the more driving experience you will have with your car.

Those are to the only things you can do . . . Gain driving experience ...

As spoiled and privileged as this may sound, I'd rather pay the higher insurance rates than drive an old car. I know the rates are high because of my age and lack of driving history. I just posted this to see if 500 a month was the best I was looking at. And thanks to some posters recommendations I've found cheaper insurance by hundreds. So that'll work for me for a while.

But everybody says that I'm going to beat up my car, need more experience, etc, which I believe and understand. So is it worth it to pay an additional 50.00 a month and have a 500 deductible opposed to $1,000?

I'm happy with Allstate. My brother got dropped by state farm after a motorcycle accident and actually saves money now that he went to Geico.

Get quotes from other insurance companies. My insurance was ridiculous when I got my license at 18. Two years later it dropped to 65 a month for just liability. Then I bought my Prius and it's high at 160 a month for full coverage. Nationwide and Geico have been the cheapest for me.

How much can you afford out of pocket? If you save (meaning deposit) $50 per month for 10 months you'll have enough to self insure the higher deductible.

As mentioned above, there are other factors in play so this decision should not be based just on money.

Don't falsify your application. If the insurance company is motivated enough they will discover the truth, void your policy, and possibly get you charged for insurance fraud. If your "other driver' or residents of your "other address" consented to the fraudulent application then that's a conspiracy and everyone could find the weight of the justice system falling on their heads. Maybe 99.99% get away with it 99.99% of the time but are you willing to take the risk?

Another factor to be considered. Your new to having insurance. If you have no prior history of insurance, whom ever you get quotes from will factor this into the first 6 month premium. The second 6 months should be substantially less. Your normal rate. This should also go down gradually over the next couple years assuming you maintain a clean driving history with no claims. Another factor in insurance quotes these days is your credit rating. 740 or better will also get you additional discounts. If rent, consider bundling a renters policy. You may get another discount but in the end pay a little more for the added policy.

Well I just spoke to my parents and told them about my dilemma. It's something that I didn't want to do but I figured I'd explore all my options, regardless of my pride. They said they could add me to their insurance so long as I pay the difference in their rate increase. So would this option be substantially cheaper?

Absolutely! They won't be billed anything extra because it is a new policy in your name for your vehicle, that now qualifies for multi policy discounts, but you will need to request a separate billing in your name but may need to use your parents home address as the billing address. The insurance company will send paper policy renewals to that address. But beyond that everything else can be setup for online payments and billing notices.

I do this for my daughter who is 26 and no longer lives in our area but is still in state.
Her bi-annual renewals show up here twice a year and we forward them to her. Her policy would, percentage wise, be about 35% higher for the same coverage in the area that she lives.

@DMC-5180 So I won't be charged extra for living in LA? My parents live about 100 miles north from me, so I know for a fact they don't get charged the ridiculous L.A. prices.

What ever deductible you choose, stick that in the bank now and forget it...you may need it tomorrow for all you know. What ever agreement and history you and your folks have, your insurance will be cheaper paying only the difference on their policy...however...use this time wisely to establish your track record and get your own policy quickly. You may be a new driver, but you are 23 years old. ;)

Just for fun this week and because it only takes a few mins to do an online quote, I quoted with my current coverage a Camaro SS, a Mustang GT, an Ecoboost Mustang, a Focus ST, a WRX, an STI, and a couple full sized pick up trucks....

The STI and Camaro SS were all about $100 more every 6 months replacing the 2015 Persona. The others ranged by maybe $12 more to $80 more....

So yeah, just for comparison purposes the Prius is pretty costly to insure and not that much more to insure as compared to high performance sports cars....o_O

It has to have to do with the high cost of hybrid parts and repairs if needed...

My daughter lives in metro Milwaukee. I live in small town USA 2.5 hours from her.

She went to college there so we kept her on our home area plan. She technically does not have a permanent residence to call home. Our agent knows she lives there but has allowed us to keep her on our policy. If your still going to school you can easily claim student status from your parents home. Like I said, you will need to use there address as your address for policy and billing. Once setup you do paperless billing. Does your drivers license still have your parents home address?

@DMC-5180 I currently live in my own apartment (and have for the past year) but moving out as we speak. I'll be living on campus this upcoming year, so I won't have a permanent address anymore after next week. My license has my current apartment address.

I think my daughter still has our home address on her license, but not really sure.
In our state you do not need to get a new license every time you change addresses.
You are supposed to notify the DMV using online services for address change updates
That get tied to your license number as current.

Anyway this is how it works in our situation.

Your situation may vary of coarse.
