What is "Can View"?

    In another forum the question of regenerative braking was posed and one of the posters suggested using Can View which is supposed to provide additional detail about what's going on in the Prius computer. I did a search on Can View and was shown the very same post suggesting that I do a search on Can View.....so, folks, can anyone tell me what it is and if/how it can be acquired and installed?

    Sadly, it is not available for my 2006. :(

    I'd buy one in a heartbeat if I could. It's the perfect uber-geek accessory for the Prius!

    So why is it not available for the 2006? Is Toyota diverging from the standard and implementing incompatibilities? Or blocking access? Or are the 3rd party tools just not up to date with the evolving APIs?

    No great plot on behalf of Toyota. They just completely overhauled how the MFD works and communicates. They obsoleted the interface employed by the CAN view. Hopefully they'll figure out how to implement it for 2006 w/Nav. And when they do, I'll have my credit card waiting!

    The interface is functional, it does it's job quite well. But yes, it is a bit 'ugly' by todays slick GUI standards. But multiple factors are at play. 1)The low resolution of the MFD, 2)The amount of memory available in the CAN-View itself (yes, chips with larger memory are available, but the cost is significantly higher), 3)Programming is more difficult.

    Honestly, you're the first person I've heard complain about it. Most of us just want it for the data and the interface is more than adequate for that.

    Yep but you do get the data and it gets better all the time! It is a better interface than the Mini Scanner for the Classics. Not as nice as Atilla's implementation but it does not need a second monitor to use it.

    Well, I know what the CAN View is.. But I'm confused on some options..

    I will have the Costal NAV override installed shortly, as well as the Costal EV Override installed.

    And I'm looking at a CANView V3 ... But do I need any of the options?

    I have a '04 with Factory Nav. So I need the 50$ Factory Nav wires kit, but what are the other options for... in detail?

    IE:
    Option: plug-in PHEV relay board with 6 reed relays and machined contact gold-flashed DB15 connector. Includes EV driver. $100
    Option: Serial O/P plus EV driver O/P for touch screen EV mode entry (Requires HV ECU pin hook-up) - $50

    So, Do I need either of these options? What do they do for me? And how long does it take to fulfil an order?

    Norm is working with the Cal Cars people on an interface for the Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle. The relay is not necessary unless you can get your hands on the rest of the stuff including the extra traction battery! The other option is for touch screen control of other equipment in this case the PHEV. I think it may also be what you need to interface another device like a computer. See the thread on the Mac Mini in the Prius. You could add those later. You need the Nav plug as you suggest.

    Unless you've already bought and paid for it I suggest not getting the NAV override. There's a very simple push button method of overriding the NAV lock out (for the '04/'05 MY) that just takes about 10 seconds to do.
