I hope the Prius isn't open to this kind of hacking....

I think the irony is all those vehicles that got turned in with the cash for clunkers program?

Would of been the safest vehicles to ride in during the A ha! or Automobile Hackers Apocalypse.

For some of them, yes. Others, not so much. Let me explain, some of those cars may not have been in the best of condition anyway.

Unless you go back to the time when cars had no computers or integrated circuits, cash for clunkers would not have made any difference.
1957 Rambler had the first electronic voltage regulator and in 1968 Volkswagen Fastback and Squareback had the first on board computer. Since then, the proliferation of electronics in autos and trucks has been fantastic. The last car with a carburetor was the 1992 Hyundai Accent, now practically all new cars in the US have fuel injection, be it direct or indirect.

Any car can be hacked, I forecast sales pf aluminum foil will go through the roof. See foil wrapped everything.

    Well, I was just kidding...

    But interesting answer.

I would argue that most of those primitive systems you are siting are so basic as to be unhackable.

Right, a lot of my friends have said cars, in case of the Apocalypse. No kidding, I don't, all of mine are 2004 and newer. If it happens, I can still hunt and fish ( there's a pond in my backyard). I was just giving examples of vehicles that EMP's might not affect. All of mine would be v.o.r. or vehicle off the road.

This is far more than days or weeks of work; they have been working on hacking cars for almost 3 years, and have been working on this particular car for a year. They've been sharing their research with Chrysler for almost 9 months. And although they will be revealing a lot of their methods of attack (and some of the code they have written) at the Black Hat conference next month, they say that they won't reveal the particular vulnerability that lets them overwrite the firmware with the hacked version - a task which, by itself, took months.

In a fight between parking brake and engine, the parking brake will not win. I have driven several cars with the parking brake still engaged - it's a little sluggish, but it can be done. And while the ignition has probably received slightly more security attention than other pieces of the car that have been hacked (to prevent stealing the car), it's probably not invulnerable.

This is just the price we're paying for living in an age of hyper-advancing technology. Anyone here who uses a computer, smartphone, etc. is part and parcel of this whole trend. Someone will figure it all out at some point. I'm not losing any sleep over it.

Yep I'd like to see them hack my Volvo 122s or my 1800.
Good luck trying to found a signal to piggy back.
Oh I guess the radio will not work but my 8 tracks will.

And then there my good old surplus GMC diesel cut the end of a shotgun she'll and put it in the the starter chamber boom and she pursue like a kitten in a cement mixer.
