New -vs- Old packaging for 0W20 Toyota oil

    Likely same oil in a new package, same LOW price ($5.65 per liter). One welcome addition: a clear strip so you can see the level in the bottle. Larger diameter neck too. Old on left, new on right:

    The larger neck makes pouring much easier and cleaner. mobil 1 has this larger neck and it's great!

    One trick, for DIY'rs after doing a change: leave the bottles sitting, for a day, then put the fill funnel back in, and pour them again. There's always at least a tablespoon, or two, that's accumulated at the bottom of the bottles. You can actually repeat this exercise for two or three days: oil on the bottle walls keeps sliding down, accumulating at the bottom.

    This puts more of the oil to it's intended use, less oil to be dealt with by the bottle recycler. You do recycle your bottles? Up here at least, Mr. Lube (and maybe any quick oil place) will take your used oil, filters, and bottles, recycle them responsibly.

    I drop the used oil off at my dealer, since they're required to take it. The bottles get thrown in the recycle bin for pick up on Mondays. I just throw the used oil filter in with the regular trash, since I don't know if they can be recycled here.

    Aside from the label, that bottle on the right looks exactly like the ones in which I bought quarts of WS a few months ago.

    When I got my "free" oil change, I asked the service writer what oil they'd use. She said "0W-20, made for Toyota by Mobil1."

    That's an admirable practice, but making it unnecessarily complicated. For decades, I've left empties draining bottom-up for a day or so, one time apiece.

    If you're putting emptied motor oil bottles in regular recycling, that's not good. Such recyclers are expecting clean containers. The reality is sadly short, but: curdled milk is one thing, motor oil definitely another. Oil bottle recycling is specialized, involving steam and centrifuges I think.

    Come to think of it, individual bottles of oil have gotta be a sunset industry. Rolls Royce would be if you could bring in approved, reusable containers, get oil from a vat.

    Yeah anyway: check around, up here Mr Lube for one will take everything related to an oil change. The DIY'rs are a drop in the bucket for them.

    Good tip on letting the bottle sit for a day.. I reuse mine by putting the used oil in there.. so I guess didn't waste any as it's going to be recycled.

    I use the large 5 quart Mobil 1 from Walmart. Unreal price which is around $25. Less bottles to manage too.
