    1. When do they usually release the fuel economy numbers?

    2. Is it time for a new forum section here? :)

I received an email this morning about the car show in New York and started reading that the 2016 Rav 4 will be coming out with an all wheel drive hybrid. Since purchasing my 2012 Prius v, I have been watching and hoping that Toyota would make a 4 wheel drive Prius. Since that doesn't seem to be happening, I can easily "settle" for a Rav 4 hybrid as my previuos car was a 2006 Rav 4. The styling will be revised for 2016 and mileage should be in the 30's. Yes, I know, not as good as any of the Prius', but I'll give up a little milage for the connivance of all wheel drive. Who's with me?

If you really want an AWD Prius, I'd just wait to see what gets announced. We already know the 2016 is coming. It's not IF, but WHEN.

If it doesn't get AWD, then fine, get that RAV4. But if it does, then you'll be glad you waited...

...just like we're glad we waited before buying a RAV4, for the 2016 announcement. Now we will wait some more and buy a 2016 AWD RAV4 Hybrid. If we had bought the 2015 RAV4 like we'd originally planned, we'd be kicking ourselves now.

I was reading on another forum that someone ordered a Highlander Hybrid in May 2014 and only just now got it. Ouch.

We have a 2014 RAV4. I was pretty convinced that a hybrid Rav wasn't happening due to the NX300h getting hybrid at launch and the Rav getting even fewer engine choices. Wish I could have waited. Oh well. We are pretty pleased with our Rav.

Any idea if the U.S. launch will be a national rollout? Or limited states like the PiP? (i.e. still waiting for the PiP in Florida, closest state is Virginia).

    Asked Toyota UK about the RAV4 Hybrid yesterday, and this was their reply;
"I strongly expect that the new RAV4 Hybrid will be released in the UK at launch."

Personally, I really really hope so. Prior to my wonderful Prius, I owned a RAV4, so the combination of the two could be a marriage made in heaven for me. :)
Especially after spending sometime recently on holiday in friends and families SUV's (Honda C-RV, VW Tiguan), I remembered just how much easier it is for my old bones to get in and out of an SUV than a regular car, especially when you are the passenger and haven't got the steering wheel to hang onto while lowering yourself into position.

I can afford to take a small hit on fuel consumption compared to the Prius, plus comparing fuel economy of the similar Lexus NX (54.3mpg UK) with the diesel RAV4 automatic (42.2 mpg UK) we presently have in the UK, I think I'll be OK. ;)

So I will wait patiently for early 2016 and see what happens. (y)

Toyota Showcases The New RAV4 Hybrid At Frankfurt

The new RAV4 Hybrid introduces more power and additional mileage to the standard RAV4 models thanks to its full hybrid system combining a 2.5-litre Atkinson Cycle petrol engine with a powerful electric motor, a 204 cell nickel-metal hydride battery located under the rear seats, a power control unit, and a power split device.

Available in both front and all-wheel drive variants, the latter comes equipped with a second, 50 kW high-voltage, rear mounted electric motor that offers increased traction and a 1,650 Kg towing capacity – without the added weight and complexity of a central drive shaft. The engine is capable of operating independently from the hybrid system front’s electric motor, driving the rear wheels alone. An E-Four system smoothly switches the RAV4 to all-wheel drive on slippery road surfaces and from stationary starts, thus maximizing traction.

    ---

The full hybrid rig develops a total power of 194 Hp, making the car accelerate from 0 to 100 Km/h (62 Mph) in 8.7 seconds, whilst achieving a remarkably low 4.9 l/100 (48 Mpg) km fuel consumption and 115g/Km CO2 emissions and is combined with a E-CVT electric continuously variable transmission - controlled by Shift-by-Wire technology, using an electronic shift lever system.

Here are the Lexus NX 300h specs:

    2.5 L engine
    194 total system horsepower
9.1 seconds 0-60 mph acceleration, or 9.2 seconds 0-100 kmh acceleration (since 100 kmh is 62 mph)
    5.0 L/100 km
    116g/Km CO2 emissions

IOW, as predicted it seems the powertrain is exactly the same , but the RAV4 hybrid is faster, shaving 0.5 seconds off 0-100 kmh acceleration. So, if Toyota detuned the engine in this RAV4 hybrid, they didn't detune it very much, and the RAV4 wins the race because of its lighter weight.

Also, I haven't verified this myself but apparently the full set of safety features for the RAV4 hybrid may only be available in the Limited edition. I had been under the impression that models like the XLE might also get it, but I was just guessing.

So, based on the Canadian/US ratings, it'll be closer to 7.0L/100km combined? (The Canadian spec NXh gets 7.1/7.7 city/hwy)

Yes those are European fuel economy numbers. The 48 mpg is US gallons, but with the European testing methodology, so meaningless in the North American setting. It will be 30-something mpg in the US, and 7.x L /100 km in Canada.

Even upper 30's would be pretty impressive.

Lower 30's is more likely though.
