I appreciate the above analyses.. Originally when I started this survey, the my idea was to try to figure out if certain model years were more susceptible to battery issues. I had in mind ...survey every model year. And that's how the survey started, but quickly there were responses saying we simply do not have that many responders on PriusChat to do that, so I re-started the survey as Gen2 generic. If I recall, before the survey started, there were a few people here on PriusChat suggesting that 2006 was a more problematic year, which was news to me but I hoping to capture that trend if true.

2005 Prius - original owner ~226,000 mi. Original battery - no problems. Driven daily to work (mountains) and back down to valley approx 30,000 miles/year since 2010. Extreme cold in winter (-30F). Answered survey in 2013. Car still going strong!

2005 Prius - original owner, just clocked in 216,000 miles today on the original HV battery. Additionally, just replaced the original 12v battery today. I do need to start lining up a new pack, anyone in NJ/NY/PA buy a new pack from a Toyota dealership? I have a mechanic who can replace it for me.

Prius 2006 with Original Battery at 205,000 miles in HOT sunny florida. Car is parked under direct sunlight in the past 3 years and the 12V Auxiliary battery died in March 2014. 12V battery replaced with OPTIMA YELLOW from Advance Auto with coupon for $150. Engine consume oil in the high speed for about 1 quarts every 5k miles which is normal for even a new car.

Catalytic Converter died at 180k miles in 2013 and replaced by Toyota Dealer for $1400. Car runs just fine, the next Catalytic converter failure will be fixed by just fooled rear O2 sensor with longer extension tube.

Use Mobil 1 0W-40 for better protection and slowdown oil consumption in highspeed.

Cool on the 0W-40 idea I'll do that too if needed someday...5W-30 Advanced Mileage might be good too

06- 154,000 miles battery failure. Most of the miles put on driving 20 miles each way on LA freeways to and from son's school 2x a day for 5 years. Dealer was no help but Customer Care gave me half off battery and warranty rate for instal (paid $1400 out the door) for replacement.

    2015 Prius v Pack IV, 49,500

As of 05/28/2018, no traction battery issues that we are aware of. Both 2009s get better mileage now than when new. We just bought the 2015 and 2010 used, this past week (May 22 and May 23).

I drove the 2010 about 650 miles on Friday. Mountainous terrain, 75+ MPH, air on, lights and stereo on... 48.8 MPG. That's calculated manually, not with the dashboard meter. This car came with custom 17" wheels and M+S tires.

    2005, 294,000 miles

289,000 miles, one battery module failure (showing low) as well as HV Control module corrosion/failure

Replaced the battery module and the HVC module with used parts. 50mph in Seattle on flat ground, 44 - 46 here where I live on the hilly PNW Coast.

This poll was only open in a few months at the end of 2013 and very beginning of 2014, so probably not a great indicator anymore. I noticed a couple people added to it today. On that note, my 2005 hybrid battery just failed at 82,000 miles and almost 13 years.

Yet another update on my 2005 Prius: Currently closing in on 326.000 miles with the original battery, engine and transmission. Nothing done to any of these major components since the car was new except for fluid changes, one set of spark plugs and a new ICE water pump. Replaced 12V twice as well. Never even took a peek at the HV battery. Only been back there to check that and verify that the spare tire area and 12V are remain free of water since this is a known issue. So far, so good.

We do not really know anymore what % of HV batteries have failed.
Our 2006 going strong at 12-years and 170k miles.
I have a feeling my HV battery is good for life of vehicle...but I am worried about other issues such as brake actuator and things like that.

Strictly a guess, but it seems like Toyota might have been able to reduce failure rates 2008+ otherwise we'd have a lot more reports as Prii sales went up. .

My 2008 Prius has over 150,000 miles and glad to report no issues with the HV battery even though I have abused it while car camping at times and let it idle with AC on for hours. Engine oil still looks like honey even after a few months and a few hundred miles so obviously the engine is in good shape. Been using a high mileage synthetic oil last few years. I only drive 3000 or 4000 miles a year last few years.

I don't think of car camping as especially abusive to the battery. The A/C draws a maximum of a couple thousand watts, often much less. That's far less power than the system routinely handles (both out, and in from regen braking) in on the road driving. Running your A/C is a steady slow drain for some number of minutes, followed by a steady slow charge; repeat. Easy street.

… and burning a bit of gas overnight would be far less costly than a hotel/motel room. Far less comfortable of course, but cheaper! ;)

The more you use it the better for the battery. Worst thing for a HV battery is sitting around unused. May want to get Dr Prius app and look at the current status. Even the free version will show a lot of info. Especially examine internal resistance and voltage differential parameters.
Also watch battery temperature to see if fan is obstructed
