understand these tires last well, so if they get loud you will have to put up with it for awhile. Think I would go the energy saver route. H

We avoid deep, unplowed snow, but otherwise the tires work fine on packed snow. We avoid ice/wet slush also. We have the luxury to stay home when conditions get too extreme.

Yup, the Prius is not much of a deep, unplowed snow car. Not enough clearance.

If you want great MPG and performance in ICE/Snow take a look at the Nokian WRg3 tires. I'm just finishing up wearing out my third set of Nokians (WR, and 2x WRg2, each lasted about 50k miles) and they have been great. I had previously had a set of Michelin MVX4+ (an older model, good mpg and performance, but not a match for the Nokians). There is a set of Nokians on my wife's Jetta just to get good traction in bad weather.

The Nokians are great. I drive the WRG3 year round and haven't seen a dip in MPG at all, and they were great in the NY snow this past winter.

Nokian WRg3 tires are LRR rated and get better average MPG (about 2 to 3%) than the OE Goodyear tires (most of the improvement is in cold weather MPG when the non LRR materials stiffen).

So it appears from tabulating responses, Either Michelin Premier or Defender XT are top, with Michelin Energy saver second.
Read up on LRR in wikipedia to understand how it affects tires.
Like Mendel Leisk says: Now I am torn/confused! Any tires will work, its just getting ones that "stick to the road" and do well on Iowa snow and ice. So may have to take the MPG hit to get best results.
But I had better decide, Winters coming!!

Local Sears store sells Michelin tires, but there was a whole two pages listing the tires. What tires are made to fit Prius?
In other words, I read a whole bunch a numbers and letters after the type but don't know how to parse the list to get just ones that fit Prius. Some Michelin tire pictures look like tires for 4x4 or vans or trucks so they can be eliminated but still left others that could work.
Help educate me on deciphering the code, please or point me to a website that can help me.
    Thanks!!

Factory size is 195-65-15'', see what they offer in that size to help narrow it down. My tire of choice is the Premier, a set on both autos.

Like Lester, I have the 195/p65R15. I figured out the R15 was 15" rims, but unsure of the first two set of numbers and whether increasing numbers is good or bad.
    Sears lists 195/65R15 91T, 195/60R15 88H, 195/60R15 88T, 205/65R15 94T, P235/75R15 108T and on and on.....:(

The first number, ''195'' is how tall a tire is. The second, ''65'' is tread width, and 15 represents the wheel diameter. The letters ''T'', ''H'' represent the speed rating of the tire-- 110 mph, 129 mph, etc. Look on a chart on Tire Rack's site and there is speed rating charts. Also, that has to due with tire construction as well, how ''beefy'' they are. A lower speed rating will probably ride smoother, they are not as stiff.

No! "195" in that example is the overall width of the tire's cross-section, and "65" is the ratio of height to width, as a percentage. Multiply those two numbers and divide by 100 to get the nominal cross-sectional height, about 127 mm in this example.

    And then get 195/65R15, lol.

Lotsa sites, TireRack for one, allow you to feed in your car info, then show you the appropriate size, speed rating and so on.

tirerack.com is an excellent research site.
The 820 rating on the Michelin is excellent but can only be compared with other Michelin tires. Each brand sets their own scale so a Michelin 820 may be the same as an Acme 650 and a Widgets 490.
