    18 - 20% MPG improvement? Woop!

    I cannot wait to get my hands on that thing! My prediction is that by the end of next summer there will be multiple reports of 70mpg tanks.

    That sounds amazing if true. Of course even with a 20% increase in fuel efficiency that would save me around $156 a year in gas (using $3 per gal, currently aground $2.10 here). That would take me roughly 42 years to break even had a paid msrp for my gen 3 persona, instead of the 24% discount I got. I don't think the Gen 4's are going to go for much under msrp for a while unfortunately.

    Where do you get the 20 mpg US EPA improvement?

    Based on a current 50 mpg US EPA, 18% would appear to improve it by 9 mpg to 59 mpg.

    No. There have always been 2 motors, neither of which drive the rear wheels.

    It's more of an eco-chic thing than a cost savings opportunity on an individual level. It's a great way to decrease ones personal carbon footprint when due for a next car.

    More importantly, these efficiencies and underlying technologies ultimately trickle down into the models of other manufacturers, something for all of society to benefit from.



    As stated "~20 MPG U.S. EPA improvement": 18% is rounded to ~20%. Many rumors for the last couple of years about ~20%...

    20% is not 20mpg on 50 mpg, it is 10 mpg but we now have a better indication, the Toyota press release said 18%.

    Right, so the news was "driving the rear wheels" not that there are two motors. So is this effectively 4WD? Wonder if this is a standard feture or a package-based option?

    If you are talking about MG1 and MG2, Toyota refers to them as a single motor, such as from the official press release for the Gen 3 Prius:

    So referring to plural motors now in the official Gen 4 press release is a definite change.

    I think that's likely an old rumor going back to at least 2012 which assumed that the 4th generation would adopt the e-4WD system from the Highlander hybrid.

    I see nothing in recent coverage or Toyota press releases or statements to support that idea. I think the AutoExpress author just copy&spas ted it from an earlier speculation article from years past.

    There is no news. They are making it up for now. Toyota has made no announcements that there will be a four-wheel-drive version of the Prius. There may be, but so far there is no indication of such an option.

    I think the 4WD refers to the TNGA platform and maybe also to the new RAV4 hybrid.

    Good catch. Was only looking at the lift-back releases.

    That certainly weakens the theory, but like the Tesla Model S upgrade, this would be a pleasant surprise that could help mpg and performance/handling.
