"He (Bush), has called for expanding tax credits of up to $3,400 apiece for buyers of hybrid cars, noting that right now there's a cap on how many can get the credit - it's 60,000 cars per manufacturer for 2006.

As of March, Toyota had already sold 22,123 of its popular hybrid Prius ($3,150 tax credit) and another 7,887 hybrid Highlanders ($2,200 tax credit) - meaning it's likely to hit the cap and later buyers will get a slashed tax credit.

Bush ordered temporary suspension of environmental rules on gasoline blends that have caused seasonal shortages in the Northeast."

The above is from a New York Post arcticle.

I am with Dubya on expanding tax credits for hybrids, but please don't short change the enviroment so Americans can further gorge on oil.

Interestingly enough, I read somewhere that we Americans are using as much or more fuel despite the rise in prices. Whatever happened to the survivalist mode that we Americans used to exhibit?

I remember my grandfather telling us stories about surviving during the Depression and making due with what you had - improvising whenever you could. And sacrificing, by rationing goods and utilities during WW2, thus ensuring that we would make it. They were indeed tough and creative, perhaps not as sophisticated as we are now, but when the sh*t hit the fan, you knew who was going to be left standing.

That's why it boggles my mind seeing the younger generation- baby boomers included- incessantly whining and crying about how things are so unfair, how their lives are so inconvenienced. Too bad we've lost that edge.

Forget about partisan politics, I'm just hopefull that someday we will regain our swagger and show the rest of the world what truly makes us Americans.

    GOD BLESS AMERICA!!!

Members of Congress up for election are going to be so eager to pass ANY positive legislation Dems and Republicans can agree on, I'll bet the extended break for hybrids passes in record time.

My ability to get the tax credit definately factors into the purchase decision to buy a hybrid. It does go a long way to offset the additional cost of the hybrid car .. though if efficency was the only thing than I'd buy a used VW TDI or Toyota's new sub-compact ??Yaris?? at 40mpg.

They left out the RX400h numbers. It's more like 36K sold through March as I recall.

Check the IRS web site. AFTER Toyota informs the IRS that they've sold 60,000, the FULL credit remains in effect for the rest of that calendar quarter AND for the next 2 quarters, then drops to 50% for the next two quarters, then 25% for the following two quarters.

The Toyota site explains it very well and includes copies of documentation that will need to be filed with the federal tax return (letter from Toyota to IRS that applies for the credit to be granted for their hybrids, and response from IRS accepting Toyota's 'application'),

Eligibility for the rebate depends on your purchase date. I bought my new 2006 Super White (pkg 5) on April 19, so I can get the full credit ($3150).

All this, of course, depends on no further changes in the law.

Almost true, but not precisely. Here is what the Toyota document says:

"The full tax credit will be available for purchases completed through the calendar quarter following the quarter in which the manufacturer reaches cumulative sales of 60,000 hybrid units. The tax credit is then reduced by one-half for the next six months; by another one-half for the next six months; and then phased out completely."

So, assuming no legislative changes, the full credit is only available for one quarter after the calendar quarter in which sales hit 60,000. Given the sales figure of 30,000+ for the first quarter, there's a good chance the credit goes to $1,575 for sales completed after September 30. You were smart to buy in April. My silver '06 with pkg 4 is supposed to be on the dock about now.

I know what you mean. Been using the phrase "tossing the hot potato" a lot at work recently when it comes to coordinating with management team. Seems like no one cares anymore.

President Bush has proposed eliminating the 60,000 cap for the remainder of this year.

He has recommended that Congress pass an ammendment that will bypass the 60,000 limit per manufacturer.
I bought my 2006 just this month anticipating the 60,000 cap which would have occured sometime this summer.

Now let's see what Congress will do!

Wait, so the 60,000 refers to TOTAL toyota Hybrids, not each Toyota Hybrid (60,000 Prii, 60,000 Highlanders, etc) individually?

 I think it would be really wonderful if people would post links to these stories. As I see it, it would make it so much easier for those that care to verify them.

I guess I'm going to have to hurry up and make up my mind. I'm picking-up a rental Prius Friday morning and I'll have it all weekend to evaluate how it fits my life. If the car is as good as I'm hoping and I can get a fair trade-in I'll be placing an order for a PKG1 the following week.

    Oops, sorry. Go to:

    http://www.toyota.com/prius/index.html?s_v..._TN_PRIUS_INDEX

Toward the bottom of the page, click on the "federal tax benefits" link, then, from the popup window, click Hybrid Federal Tax Credits link to an Adobde Acrobat (PDF) document. See the second full paragraph.

The actual link appears to be: http://www.toyota.com/images/vehicles/2006...xcreds_3_06.pdf

    hope this helps.
