    G'day -

I'm being a nice pappy and buying my daughter a set of spare wheels and Hakkapeliitta R2 snow tires for a 2007 Prius.... This time Discount Tire's Hakkapeliitta price is much better than TireByWeb so we'll end up there instead of my town's favorite family-run tire shop. I've found Hakka's to be superior in the long run to the more common brands of snows.

I've identified some used Prius wheels to buy, and they do not have TPMS installed. I'm no fan of TPMS sensors, and am trying to go cheap on those. I do understand that the battery wears out, so there's some risk involved on used, but I want to at least get the right kind. Is there a specific type that works? Part number?

Here's some eBay options (sorry I'm too new here to post links):
    Item # 281723592566: TOYOTA-LEXUS-SCION-PRIUS-TIRE-PRESSURE-SENSOR-MONITOR-4-TPMS-PAX-PMV1017

    Item # 151851348182: 06 07 08 09 10 11 12 Toyota Prius 4 Tire Pressure Sensors Set TPMS OEM

Item # 350425673289: TPMS Tire Pressure Monitor Transmitter Sensor SET of 4

    FWIW:
    - I drove a Gen 1 Prius for 12 years.
    - I prefer to avoid the programming, but as a last resort I do have Toyota Techstream (I drive a 2012 RAV4 now). Discount Tire will accommodate used sensors when I purchase the tires.

Are you able to do the sensor handshake yourself, spring and fall? If not, if it falls to a dealership or tire shop to do do it, I'd skip the sensors, if you can get away with it at the tire shop.

    Mendel -

Discount Tire dude says they will do the sensor registration spring and fall when they rotate out the tires/wheels. Said it takes them 3 minutes to do; presumably after an hour's wait there :-p Do you think that's asking for too much trouble? That way daughter can do it on her own without me. Discount Tire will mount tires without TPMS but won't bolt them on the car.

I've never tried to register TPMS using Techstream. I don't have TPMS on my RAV4 snow tire set... been meaning to do the hotwire disable but never got around to it.

Can't remember where we got my wifey's spare TPMS for her Suby, but we did get her Hakka's online and Discount Tire still did the handshake on her snows for a smile... (first time she couldn't remember and didn't ask me so just went there... she should have gone to the family tire shop because they did the mounting). Discount Tire is the only local shop that sells Hakkapeliitta...

I kinda like the 2nd eBay item 151851348182 that I listed above.... the seller already replied to a question about what model year they came from (2008).

    Thanks!

Here's my solution for my 2009 Gen II (touring package (16" rims), aka the ChuggyPig); I recently purchased a set of standard¹ steel rims (15"x6") from TireRack.com, and a set of Bridgestone Blizzak WS-80 tyres (local Toyota dealer doing a "buy 3 and get the 4th for $1" deal, they fitted the tyres, balanced the wheels, and will do the wheel swap and check the alignment. The original (summer) wheels have TPMS, but (being a cheapskate) I had the dealer fit regular rubber valve-stems (free) and I'll put a 1x1cm piece of black-tape over the warning light during the winter! I've always kept careful tabs on my tyres and pressures, so rather than have to spend $$ on the hassle of what might actually be regarded as a luxury (well, apart from the safetly aspect), I'm going for the economical solution!

¹ using standard rims gives me a much wider selection of tyres.

I'm no fan of TPMS and don't use them on the snows for my own car. But I'm leaning to getting them for my daughter's snow tires because she's less of a motorhead. Also the family tire shop warned me that there could be issues with non-paying insurance companies over the lack of TPMS.

It is my understanding that the Prius system will only accomodate 4 sensors registered at the same time, so to have TPMS on the snow-wheels requires the system be re-programmed each time the wheels are changed, thus partially defeating the convenience of having two sets of wheels, as well as being expensive (I heard $175 to re-calibrate the sensors!)

Discount Tire touts that they can re-register the new TPMS in a few minutes, free for existing customers. That aligns with my wife's experience there.

Remember, we are ending up at Discount Tire because they distribute Hakkapeliitta tires; the best snows we've found.

If it was me I'd jump on that option:

I appreciate TPMS, love the security, but the need for constant electronic intervention whenever you swap tires queers it for me. I do my own tire swaps, and opted to keep it simple.

I have 2 TPMS sensors on my '07 Prius that aren't working, so I was glad to find this thread. I just had my tires replaced at the dealership, but they didn't have the sensors in stock. I was thinking of buying them elsewhere to save money. Would the "DPAccessories DP-TPMS-4 Tire Pressure Monitoring System Sensor" available on Amazon be an adequate replacement? The price is right. I'd take them to Discount Tire or a local auto repair shop to have them installed.
