I brought my Prius 2007 to near Cancun Mexico, and am living here. I need a battery and Autozone in Cancun only has a regular battery available, that is in their books as a replacement for my car. There are no optimas, they don't list them on the computer at all. of course,, there are not many Prius' down here. however, is it ok to use the regular battery? I have 200,000 miles already on the car and that's the original battery.

the battery will work. some things to look for are post size and adapters, battery size and how you'll secure it.

the biggest issue is safety, you don't want a liquid battery in the cabin with you when the mexican robbers rear end you to get you to pull over.

Good point. Fortunately, that type of behavior is totally uncommon in Quintana Roo (Cancun to Playa del Carmen areas). Thanks! and the Autozone price is pretty reasonable, under $100usd. Thanks for the quick reply!

You also don't want the sulfuric acid fumes from normal battery outgassing to be circulating inside the passenger cabin. The design battery has a vent that attaches to a tube going to the outside of the car.

whoa! good point! But it is a sealed unit, and it is the one that Autozone's system showed as being the right one for the car... do I trust them? yikes.

Translation: Get an AGM battery, which won't spurt acid if smashed, as a "regular" flooded battery might. It doesn't have to be one marketed specifically for Prii, as long as it's a reasonable approximation of the original's capacity, you can make connections to the terminals, and you can mount it securely. It should be vented.

Sealed units will still burp occasionally through their pressure relief vents. I don't know how much of a problem this really presents.

Getting one shipped to you may be the best ,most agm batteries have a place to put the vent tube on if it will be inside the vehicle.
The conventional acid filled will work as mentioned earlier ,but there is the danger of fumes even if it is sealed there is a vent of some type on it.
So you would need to make sure the area is ventilated where the battery is, temporarily one regular battery may get you home you would just need to use caution with it, no smoking, excessive heat, etc. as batteries will ruin your day if not handled properly.
I see now that you live there, my mistake, as Bisco said try and get to a dealer if you have no other choice for AGM batteries near you. Safety should be everyone's first concern.

Your Right it is an AGM battery, my apologies. I didn't read the description as I should have. I will edit my post.

No problem, I looked at this battery for a long time before I decided to give it a try, couldn't believe the price on the Toyota or Optima battery so I wanted to make sure this reasonable alternative would work. I saw on this site that it had been used by someone and found that it did actually work.

That's the same battery I bought through Amazon for $65 shipped. It is AGM. It works well for me too, so far, BUT:
1)You'll need simple spacers on top and at the end to secure it, because it's shorter and lower than the original battery. (It's also slightly wider, but not too wide to fit.)
    2) It has no vent hose connection as such, but you can easily modify it to have one, so it can connect to the original vent hose.
    3) The original battery cable connectors can be made to fit slightly awkwardly with no modification, or you can use a terminal adapter. There are otherwise similar batteries with another terminal configuration that might be a little less awkward.
    4) It's about 7 pounds lighter than my original battery.

Harbor Freight sells the same battery under their name for solar- and wind-power systems. Similar batteries of many other brands widely sold for a multitude of applications from electric wheelchairs to UPS systems.

There should be very little to no burping from an AGM, unless it is overcharged by abnormal voltage per cell---which is unlikely, but can happen either due to malfunction of the car, or to shorting of one cell.
