It means the 12v battery was discharged from sitting there too long, which they jumped and then the computers came on, you got a "ready" state and the computers used the 200 volt HV battery to "start" the engine, primarily to warm it up initially. At that point the 200 v battery is slowly charging the 12v battery through a dc/dc converter but did not have enough time to complete. They need to put a slow charger on it. Probably is ok but getting them to change the 12v battery would be a plus. Or maybe karma is trying to tell you something.

    Hi RJ,

Thank you again for your note and information on it.... It was dead as a door nail when we first arrived.. We were sitting at the salesmans desk while they were playing w/numbers when I put my post up, so was rather short.. I tagged along w/the service tech so as to see how he jumped the car, which was under the hood at the fuse box, as opposed to in the trunk at the battery. I was curious, since the back hatch was locked and couldn't be opened that I could see. (I don't think he even knew where the battery was. I asked if they've had to jump it before and he said he had to move it earlier today.

They had another couple scheduled to look at the car ~1/2 hr after us, but w/the delay in getting it started it was almost their apt time by the time we took our drive.. It seemed to run fine, but was less then 10 miles or so, so not much of a chance to charge it back up. The battery quickly died after we got back & that's when all the stuff on the dash was flashing & really weird.. Kinda freaked me out.. They left it run, but it would run & shut off.. (assuming a painful recharge)

I do know it's been sitting there undriven for at least 3 weeks.. The odometer has only had 3 miles on it since they took the car in on trade. (so makes sense it might need a deep extended charge, but they agreed to replace the starting battery.

So the deal is this.. since the other couple was there and they told them it needed a starting battery, they said they wanted the car if we didn't take it, we committed to purchase it if it all checked out okay after it gets a new battery... We opted to trade my old Ford Escort ($400 trade, I was hopeful for $500 but it has 210k.. I said at least mine runs!!)

But anyway, if the car still has problems after it gets a new battery, then we can get our full deposit back w/no issues.

It has new brakes, front & rear & will get redetailed by Thursday..

While looking at the starting battery I did find the wiring harness connector for trailer lights (all nicely done w/the harness ETrailer shows on their website) it is the smaller receiver hitch, not the larger 2" I thought it had..

So, a little nervous, but everything I saw seems to make it look like a bad starting battery.. I'm hopeful that is all, and they didn't burn up something else causing this problem..

I guess I have an out if it doesn't feel right after a new battery.. It seems like a really nice car & ran good.. Everything seemed to work fine otherwise.. I question if this is not a Three, since it has the HD radio and Sirius.. backup camera.. and what I thought is the Entune package..

Sorry so long & hopeful not bad Karma..
I wonder if the other couple got a free dinner for helping push us on a sale? My other option was to walk away.. I believe I still have an out if the new battery doesn't solve the problem..

Does anyone know if the hitch and wiring harness will void any remaining warranty on the hybrid components? (I wonder if Toyota would tell me if I give them the VIN as to if it's previously been voided?)

The CarFax is clean and I believe it has a buy back guarantee on it if not accurate..
(but I would need to check that again)

all pri have a jump point under the hood. easier than climbing in back and unlocking the hatch manually.
new brakes are a bad sign, and may have something to do with the trailer hitch. some people have had rear brake issues in salty area's, any idea where it was first registered?

    Hi Bisco,

Thank you for your note & reply.. The info on the jump makes me feel better about that.

I tend to agree w/you on the brakes in that maybe related to the trailer.. But we DO live in the CLE area.. (also known as the rust belt) the car was sold here new locally..

I did see a CarFax today for another used V and it had the brakes replaced at ~ 60k according to the CarFax.. It was interesting to see this one had brakes replaced since it wasn't on the CarFax we have for this black car. I thought ar 55k, that it was probably time or getting close to time for brakes, so maybe they just did them to be safe for resale? They did do a complete check list on it (but are a Buick/GMC dealer)

I am sure you will like the car, but take a LONG test drive before you take delivery. Maybe an hour up and down the freeway. Check the oil before and after for color and fill. As bisco says, brakes on a hydrid usually last way over 100,000 miles because most of the routine braking is done by the electrical regeneration. I would prepare a "contract cancellation" document in writing just in case you see anything you don't like. I hate salesmen who use pressure tactics like the other couple wants it if you don't. Also get and read the 30 day parts and labor warranty they are giving you.

Hi RJ and Bisco, thanks again for your replies.. I did check the oil while waiting for the first jump and it was clean and on the mark.. But will do on the cancellation document just in case.. It was odd, my wife and I have never had someone else come in like that before while we were still there.. It was a completely different sales person that had the apt booked.. So hard to tell if legit.. (it seemed legit tho) They have reduced the price on the car by $2048 since I first saw it, so maybe getting more appealing now w/the lowered price.. (?)

My wife is trusting my judgement, she typically gets only new cars.. I'm the used car type.. (the hybrid part worries me a bit more)
I hope not to completely ruin her faith in me or wind up with a problem car.. Thanks for all your help

The HV battery starts the engine. The 12 volt battery only starts the computers and the safety tests. It gets you to READY so the relays allow the HV Battery online.

Symptoms of a bad 12 volt battery In ON, (turn it on without the foot on the brake) how fast are the power windows? If they are as fast as Ready, the battery is fine. (Gen 2 has a screen to see the status of the 12 volt battery, i am not sure Gen 3 does)

Yes, I know they are, but still close to $10k more.. That's not something I can do unless we could get the old Ford to last another year.
It's a matter of timing for us..

One other thing I forgot to mention, but apparently only 1 key fob for this one.. I know those are not an inexpensive ticket.. So another thing I'll need to consider.. I'm sure posted on Prius Chat somewhere.. (I just need to look)

Thank you for your note and info Jim.. The dome.lights quickly dimmed esp when I put the drivers window down.. I wasn't sure if it was gonna go back up.. That's when everything went crazy on the dash panel.. & which led me to believe a bad 12v battery.. I assume the 12v batter runs all the Accessory type stuff like that..

Yes it is obviously cheaper for Toyota to use the same 12 volt accessories and lights as millions of other cars. The video shows converting the 201 volts in the HV battery to 12 volts for the 12 volt battery.

Thanks for all the help last night.. you guys are ALL awesome here.. :)
just re-reading all my posts now on a real PC/monitor. a little difficult to see stuff on my phone..
(I get to see all my typo's today too) - sheesh..

apparently, the car sat closer to like ~2 months according to CarGurus:
    Negotiation
    Selling slowly
    45 days on CarGurus

Price History comprises prices posted on CarGurus for this vehicle on the dates indicated.
Price History Price dropped by $3,958

    $18,371 Sep 12
    ...
    $14,933 Oct 25
    $14,413 Today

That said, I'd have thought the 12v battery would have been fine for that period of time in the summer.
but in all that time, hard to tell how many short starts it had and only ~3 miles on it.
I'm expecting to have a receipt for the new battery in the paperwork. (assuming that solves it)
so, that I will have a receipt for the battery warranty period.

I was wishing I could have marked it in some way to know for certain they replaced w/new as opposed to just charged it for 2 days.
(since it didn't look old when I peeked in there last night.. was getting a little dark by then)

Here's a link to the car you've all been most helpful with:
Used Toyota Prius v For Sale - CarGurus

Will need to find a replacement key fob.. I'm hopeful not an arm & leg for one of those
and not too hard to program or get made.. -j

they have a date code on the top. it doesn't take much to kill these batteries, they are very small. one deep draining and they're toast. search here for gen III fob replacement to get an idea. there are a few members with good threads.

Thanks Bisco... will do.. I'm aware of tire date codes, and have seen them on Batteries that we've gotten at Costco in the past. so, kinda forgot about that on this one.. Hopeful, that it's obvious and not an issue when we go back. (I'll probably need my glasses and a flash light w/my tired old eyes)

sadly, you may have to take all the junk off the top. but if it keeps working, it's probably new. new toyota battery has a 7 year warranty, first two are free replacement.

Hey guys, they put a new 12v battery in & all checked out AOK today, so we are officially a 2 Prii family.. :) Being they are a Buick/GMC dealer they put a new Delco (it's yellow) battery in it.. Was pretty obvious it is new.. Tho I didn't know anyone else made this battery.. It has a 5yr warranty in it. (according to what he told me)

As for the key fob, they had a note, the P.O. has the 2nd fob and was supposed to bring it in. Our saleman has a note to call him and hopes to have it w/in a couple days.. (will see)

Also, the shade for the cargo area is not w/the car.. I assume that is standard in all V's?.. And/or it might store under the floor in the back?
I looked & still didn't see it in the car, so he's also gonna ask for us..

The car drives great (amazing how much better w/new battery) & we only drive 12 miles home after fill up, but averaged 55.4 w/it on the way home in city traffic.. (must have had a tailwind?) lol

Thanks Again for all the help w/it.. -j&s

Hey a quick question regarding the Cargo Cover option?
It's not in the car.. I assume it was part of the standard package.. but it's not stored away below the floor either that I could see.

So, that said.. and in looking to find another..
do they come in Dark Grey or Black?? All I've seen online is Light Grey..

Grey would work, but I believe all our trim is Dark Grey or Black..
I didn't see any other than Light Grey..
