In my on-going saga of pain with my Windows 10 upgrade, now the start button does not respond.

If I right click it, I still get the whole laundry list of things that has always appeared, but just "clicking it" nothing happens, which makes it a pain to get to a variety of programs.

Googled the problem and find it to be a known issue, but I can't find any official MS solution.

I have found various solutions, which seem all over the map, on various forums I have never heard of, and none of them have much, if any feedback, which makes me reluctant to try them.

The only site I recognized that addressed the problem was Tomshardware, but even that site really did not offer any solutions, other than to reinstall. Want to make that a last resort. Indeed, not even sure HOW to do that

    UPDATE from OP:

After calming down after listening to some Pure Prairie League, I searched some more on the web with no satisfaction.

Went back to the desktop, left-clicked on the "task view" icon, just to the right of the search box, went back to the start button and then left-clicked and now it works.

Still must be something I need to tweak, but at least I have it responding now.

I use classic shell start replacement. Extremely customizeable.

I ran into the same problem with the start button when upgrading to Windows 10. Like you, it took me a few minutes to try the Task View icon.

It is a definite improvement over 8 but I still prefer the 7 we are using at work.

Microsoft's attempt to be like Apple did not turn out very well!!

Classic Shell has Windows 7 style start menu.

Exactly how did Microsoft attempt to be like Apple?

Anyone know, or care to speculate, how MS's going to deal customers who don't upgrade, say stay with Win7? Drop support at some point? Make it impossible to update?

First, free upgrade period ends. Then drop support eventually. Can't remember the date, but it's already been set.

Oh yeah, the end of the free upgrade period. After that, they'll pay you to upgrade, right?

I believe they said "one year", so that'd be 'till mid-July 2016.

Thanks for the nudge. I saw Classic Shell mentioned several times when I was looking for a solution to the non-functioning start button issue, but I was totally clueless about what it was/did. So, looked into it some and saw it has rave reviews. Just installed it, quick and easy.

Hope I still like it after a few days. :D

Trying to emulate the iPad with the Tablet Mode, the iCloud with the Cloud Drive and syncing all of your MS devices, to name a couple.

Well, everything single one of those menu is customizeable and three styles of start menus to choose from. Remember as the name implies. It's meant to replace the stock start menu with a classic style start menu.

Correct. The same way that XP was phased out and so on. The point of Windows 10 is that it is very expensive for Microsoft to maintain OS support for over a decade. Every security update has to be made to work with all the OS's that aren't obsoleted at the time and that can be a pain the butt. There's the normal date, the extended date, and the super special extended date for high value customers. Consumers get cutoff first.

As said from an Apple fanboy. Large interface tablet mode existed long before the iPad. There was even an entire version of XP for tablet support. I had tablets back then running it, and it worked great. The iPad and other SLATES are nothing new, again just well marketed to people ignorant of tech. Apple once again copied what was done before, put a shiny case over it and sold it to idiots for a huge markup.

Cloud storage existed way before iCloud. In fact, in 2007 Windows Live Folders was launch, which was cloud based storage. In 2008 it changed its name to Sky Drive. Dropbox came out in 2008, AFTER Windows Live Folders. Google Docs was 2010, again after Dropbox and Microsoft. iCloud was launched in late 2011... 4 YEARS after Microsoft did the same thing. So Apple copied Microsoft again if you want to be factual.

Google has been syncing all your devices for many years, way before Apple did it. Back in the day it was a PITA to get a new iPhone because you lost everything unless copied over at the store. With Google I could wipe my phone, log back in and all my photos, text messages, call logs, apps, settings, everything would sync and appear immediately. But you may want to again look at Microsoft again. Microsoft Exchange is still the goto for businesses in terms of syncing. It keeps all your calendars, contacts, emails, and other things synced between yours and many other computers and has been. Guess when that came out? 1993. Yup, 22 years ago.

Apple fanboy! That is the funniest thing I have heard today.

I am engineer that grew up on DOS and still prefer MS over Apple any day. I do have an iPad and iPhone and do think Apple is a better system for the non-engineer like my wife.

    Thanks for the history lesson.[/QUOTE]

It seems to me that you are hating on Microsoft just to be trendy and are ignorant on basic PC history. Microsoft's "Cloud Drive" as you called it (It is actually called OneDrive, SkyDrive before it) has been around since 2007; Apple's iCloud came out in 2011, four years after. Also, there was Dropbox, box.net and several other cloud storage companies in the 2010's, well before iCloud. Apple has no hand whatsoever in inventing cloud storage or syncing.

There have been several Window's tablets since around 2005, long before the iPad's debut in 2010. Syncing devices was part of Live Mesh since 2007. Only difference is that back then there were fewer different kind of devices to keep synced. Now you could sync your Surface, similar tablet, desktop, phone, Xbox One and soon Holo Lens.

So no, Microsoft is not trying to emulate Apple.

This is the second funniest thing I have heard today!

I must have really struck a nerve in the MS fanboys:)

Like I told 2K1 Toaster, I grew up on MS and still prefer to work with MS at work. I was only expressing a personal opinion. If you do not agree with it, fine with me.

Why the need for personal attacks?

No, no struck nerve, just clarifying that Microsoft is not emulating Apple, far from it.

And I did not mean ignorant as an insult, I apologize if you took it like that. I meant ignorant as the actual definition of the word "someone that lacks knowledge" in this case in PC history.
