I just acquired my first Priuis, a 2012 PiP coming out of a fleet (and out of warranty). Naturally I've been obsessing over when/why the ICE kicks in. The PiP FAQ on this forum has been most helpful in giving me ideas. But the weirdest thing is that (when I have full EV battery) when the ICE finally settles down, sometimes the car will show in EV mode (and the Energy readout as EV only) but ICE is still running! Does anyone have words of wisdom about this?

Congrats! When you say out of warranty, how many miles on her? You may be one of our PiP miles accumulated leaders. Not sure we have anyone out of warranty yet, but TN is non-CARB.

    Congrats!

May we ask what mileage and price you paid?

Trying to see what they are going for right now.

    Thanks!

there are two ev lights. the one on the left is ev mode. the one on the right means you're running in ev while in hv. you can use ev mode even while the ice is warming.

2012 PiP 35K miles. I got it from Carmax so just paid their price of $16.5K. If I were a good haggler maybe I could have gotten one for less. It doesn't have any fancy extras like automatic headlights or radar cruise control. It was a fleet car in Maryland.

I know the difference between EV and HV mode. The weirdness is in the fact that (only when I have EV miles available from plugging in), sometimes the ICE will run even though it is not showing as running in the Energy display. Usually it is when the engine is getting close to shutting off. (BTW I am dissatisfied with how long it takes to shut off. Sometimes at red lights I turn the car off and back on just to get the ICE to stop running.)

I think one reason my ICE was starting in the first place is that I had the air system set to "Auto" and it has gotten cool enough that the heater may be kicking in. I turned it off and haven't had much trouble with the ICE starting up unexpectedly since.

I would think you would have the remainder of the 8 year 100k mile battery warranty?

Indeed I would think the battery would still be under warranty. I was speaking of the warranty on the rest of the car.

I did read the faq. That's where I learned the heater starts the ICE. But I didn't see anything about he weird display issue there.

I've had it happen too, but the first downhill, I just turn off EV for a second by clicking the EV/HV button, turn it on again, and it usually stays in EV mode. It's usually when heat is on or fast acceleration or there's a big hill.
