How many EV miles do you get after a full charge now?

    Not a correct assumption. Even if I could only manage 5 miles of EV range, but only ever drove 5 miles, then my MPG would be higher than baylorbob if he ever drove beyond his 20 mile EV range and the gas motor started.

    The reason the PiP is brilliant is that extending EV range generally doesn't significantly improve MPG, and Toyota realized this. Even if my PiP could regularly get 20 miles in EV mode, it wouldn't improve my EV ratio much because 20 miles of range is insignificant on the 2000 mile roadtrips I take. For all other trips around town, the EV range can cover most of the distance.

    It's more economical to have a smaller battery that you regularly use the full capacity than to lug around a big, heavy, expensive battery that you rarely use the entire amount.

    All very true, but it is very much dependent on each driver. If you normally drive 20 miles a day and not just 5 or 10, then having a 20 mile battery greatly improves your EV ratio. That is the unbiased engineering view.

    From, marketing/sales point of view...once you've driven in EV you tend to want to do it more and you want more EV miles. Thus the Volt is taking lots of sales from the PIP, IMHO.

    From a purchase-priority point of view, it's like horsepower. As desirable as more is, there are many who seek a happy balance for importance rather than favor it.

    plug ins are like any other car, people will pick the one that suits them best. no mfg is gonna lock in sales with a 'one size fits all'.

    I guess I got the third one. :p By El Crucero's definition of EV miles, I get a lot more than 14 EV miles on my PiP. No picture proof is necessary. I don't think it's even possible. You have to mentally count the number of EV miles accumulated in HV mode. The car doesn't track it. It just displays 999. Look at my signature picture. I traveled 52.4 miles and had 105 mpg consumption. Since the PiP doesn't take into account kWh, I'm just going to assume I got 50 mpg on HV mode having used up 0.5 gallon of gasoline. That means I got a whopping 27.4 EV miles on one charge! Yes, at freeway speeds of 60 mph at some point.

    Unfortunately, I can't just assume I got 50 mpg in HV mode, I could just as easily have gotten 75 mpg driving really slowly and only got 15 miles EV. So unless someone pokes a hole in my math here, I'm going to believe you, El Crucero. I'm able to reproduce what you described. :cool: I just don't have the patience to count. I also did what Baylor Bob did but that's going downhill. I don't feel like gunning my car in PWR mode to prove him.

    The issue stemmed from the engine never running, somehow getting into HV and staying in stealth (non-EV electric-only) for another +10 miles.

    The key word is never. Like I can say during those 27.4 EV miles for me, the engine was never running. Of course it wasn't running, they're EV miles. In between those EV miles, the engine was running.

    Post 157 describes what he actually did. He's counting EV miles while in stealth HV. The engine is never running when he counts them.

    exactly. it's just a misunderstanding of concepts. by this definition, a lift back also gets an amazing amount of ev miles, that's the function of a hybrid electric car.

    That's what we were waiting for, a detail we kept pushing for clarification on. It was implied that the entire trip consumed 0.00 gallons of gas. It's too bad our requests for additional information were misinterpreted so badly, resulting in quite an over-reaction.

    In other words, the behavior intended to be described wasn't something we haven't ever encountered before. It was just shared in a such a way that understanding the circumstances was a challenge.

    That happens from time to time with any type of interface. A vital bit gets overlooked.

    My 2012 has 32.5 k on it now and it will show depending on how I charge it ,timer vs plain charge 11.7 to 13.6 or so max , most of the time it's 11.7--12.6 miles. Actual mileage , I get more as I blend it into my commute and can get 25--50 percent more by using it wisely.
    I do notice that even though I put it in have mode upon start up after the first mile or two my ev miles will drop a bit to about 10.5 even though I was running in hv mode with the engine on, my guess would be that the computer is reading a surface voltage upon start up.
    I have had it almost a month now and am still learning the best way to utilize the ev miles. I did reset the computer by disconnecting the 12 volt battery, so my data would be more accurate.

    in hv mode, it will use some battery to reduce load on the engine, until it warms up.

    That makes sense , I kind of worry about starting out in ev with a cold engine and then kicking it on under a load for the initial startup.

    me too, but as long as it isn't as your just about to gun it up the ramp onto the highway, you're fine hitting the hv button at any time.

    For maximum battery-longevity, the system will always deplete the SOC (state of charge) level from 85% (full) to 72.5%. That way, when you brake, there's some capacity available to send the electricity to without exceeding the usual 85%.


    I don't at all. Living at the bottom of a large hill and just a few blocks from a highway entrance, I was routinely doing that. Watching after-market gauges, you can see the loads aren't that demanding.

    Ditto. I don't worry about it at all. The ICE starts up every morning at high speed on the highway after I go past 62 mph. You can tell engine loads are low as the engine is relatively quiet and the electric whine is higher pitched. This is the Prius automatically protecting the engine so I don't have to worry.

    I would add to the good answers you received:
    Those EV miles lost when switching manually to HV mode will be returned slowly to the bank down the road by the (warmed-up) engine if you stay in HV mode long enough (6-8 miles).

    Thanks for the info,with what all of you guys have told me I will try starting out on electric mode in the morning and see how it works out.
