Warm up stage noise

    My PRIUS makes noise at warm up stage and it was lasting tree days.



    The maintenance technician said it may cause from the engine oil.

    This is an issue that happens when you start the car, and turn it off before the engine turns off by its self. Do you move the car for a short distance and shut it off?

    The next time you start the car let it warm up and shut down to EV. Then shut the car off, this should solve your problem. As to engine oil, you should only use Toyota Oil or Mobile 1 oil. I would not trust any other oil, but this is not the cause of the noise.

    So it does it only in the morning, when you start up in the garage? Or is it doing it when you get back in the car after closing the garage door?

    Everyday I drive my car out from my garage. It takes a short distance. Then stop my car(not shut it down) on the road and get out my car to close my garage's door. But I never shut my car down when it is in warm up stage.
    Several Prius owners talk to me this situation likes a diesel engine and some prius and ct200h in taiwan have the same problem in cold weather. But the weather in Kauhsiung's morning is not cold, the temperature in these days is above 26°C. They say it looks like the service bulletin T-SB-0204-11. But taiwan nerver call any prius back to seevice station to fix it.

    we haven't had much luck fixing it either. if you don't shut down while the engine is running, there's not much else to do, unless you can get the dealer to install a new intake manifold. how often does it do it? do you use 0w-20 synthetic there? it has been reported that powering down and then up again will relieve the problem. does it do it when you leave work at night, after sitting in the hot sun all day?

    It happens at engine is cool down.

    This video is today noon I taked.



    The noise is less serious than yesterday(10/10) morning.

    Some friends say it is old problem of prius. But my prius has never heppened till 10/8 this year.

    That sounds like what others have experienced. Is it under warranty with Toyota? Take it to them to listen and see what they say? If letting the engine warm up before turning off does not help, I don't have any other ideas.

    Maybe try a different gas station, not sure what kind of quality fuel you have in Taiwan?

    maybe throttle body/maf cleaning, pcv, injectors and etc.

    how many miles on her? what oil are you using?

    AT 10/10 noon I changed engine oil in toyota service station. The situation seems be improved till today. But when engine starts warming up, it still has several seconds engine shock.

    About 30000miles. When it happened the oil is fullbore 0W20, and two weeks later the technician of TOYOTA suggested me changing the engine oil. Then the oil is changing to Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy 0W20. Now the situation seems better, the engine knocking would happens a few seconds during warning up stage.

    Some PRIUS owners say there are problems of the intake system. But the technician of TOYOTA just cleaned the air throttle and changed the oil.

    12/1 the technician of Toyota inspected my prius and found three of four cylinder fuel injectors were blocked. Each blocked injector only has 3~4 nozzles to spray fuel. And the other one cylinder fuel injector is clean and works normaly, but the spark plug in the cylinder was carbon deposits. After cleaning the fuel injectors and spark plugs. The engine noise at warming up stage seems to have disappeared.

    congratulations. you either got some bad gas, or bad gas is common.
