v or Gen 3???

    I have had an 08' gen 2 (40k mi) and a 10' gen 3 (105k mi). I really liked the gen 3. I had a car for a year through work but now I am ready for another Prii (cant wait, getting 22 mpg is a bummer). I am torn between the gen 3 and the v. I will have more time now to do my favorite pastime's of camping, photography, and hiking. This makes me lean more towards the v since it has more room for sleeping in and carrying gear. On the other hand, my kids are off to school so it's gonna be just me most of the time. My goal is to spend increasing amounts of time road-tripping to far off places exploring over the next few years. I was so sure I was going to get the v and now I'm second guessing myself because of the mpg's. Help me make up my mind!

    Easy choice. Either way, you'll be getting twice (or more) your present 22mpg.

    I like my v (lowercase v for the Prius v wagon) because I need that space both are good choice but only you could know what you really need

    agree^^^, it's a simple decision between space and mpg's. i like the v a lot, but i would opt for mpg's, and also look at gen IV. but i'm not a camper. have you driven a v?

    We have a '14 v at the dealership right now that I have driven. I like how it rides..... I guess my real question would be, with hypermiling effort, can I return mid 40's or better? I would be happy with that. This year I will have covered 17.5k miles so it looks like I would save about $150 a month give or take. The car I have now requires premium! Ugh. Thanks

    i would check out the v forums for performance history. i don't see why not. reset the trip meter and tke it for a good long drive with no shoes on.:p

    Very easy to do 40-42 with a v (lowercase v for the Prius v wagon) unless you drive like a pig

    Based on what you said, I'd go with the Prius v (lowercase v for the Prius v wagon). It's very simple really. If you get the regular Prius and realize something you need doesn't fit on your trip, you have to take another car, buy a smaller replacement, leave it behind. If you buy a Prius v and regret the fuel economy, you just pay some 6% extra for fuel over a regular Prius. That's about $50 a year fuel cost difference. Even if you only take one trip a year, that is much cheaper than having to rent an SUV, buy a new fishing pole or most importantly leaving your spouse behind for the extra storage space.

    That's a great answer! I was just over reading on the fuel economy thread too and it looks like quite a few can eek out 45+, so my decision is made. Going for a v. I may even pull the back seats and build a light weight sleeping platform/storage area for it.

    In your SoCal location you *could* be able to match my MPG. That said, its still about what you want to use it for.
    I was on the fence till I saw that ridiculous flying buttress console in the hatchback and vowed never to drive one.

    Well,today is my day off so I went in and borrowed the v to drive my commute. 51.5! I was definitely driving for mpg's but I've got no worries about getting 45 consistently.

    You can get 43-44 in a v even without any hypermileing tricks. And that is real MPG, not the overstated MPG from the dash display. I drive a mix of 5 mile, 50 mile and 250 mile one way trips and I drive it like it was a normal car with perhaps a little less speed on the highways when I can and not affect anyone else. You can see from my fuelly signature my 27k miles results.

    yeah the dash is so overstated that I really don't pay attention to it. We just passed 2000 miles on our 2015 this week and it averages 41 real world mpg without hypermiling. We just drive it and let it do it's thing. We're driving to Texas for Christmas, so we'll get a good hwy mpg test.

    My 2014 v w/about 8k miles averaged about 50 mpg this fall for 5 tankfuls (real calculated MPG). That's with minimal careful driving, no hypermiling driving. Of course, now with colder temps (Minnesota) and many short Xmas shopping trips I'm down to just above 40 MPG, but that was expected.
