OK, apart better fuel consumption, what's the big deal for the Gen4 Prius?

I own a Gen3 Prius since Sep. 2009 (with about 95.000km). I am really in love with the car, its driving and the HSD.
The fuel consumption on average is very good, considering my driving style, where I mostly drive (city traffic on hilly terrain) and non-flat region where I live.
I really really like the Gen4. I like the design, I like the updates, I like the looks. I really feel I want to upgrade.
    But then....
Then you start looking at the numbers, at the €€€€ and you think - is it really worth it?
Why should I sell a really good Gen3 that so far had only brake pads and discs changed (salt used on the streets here in winters and you don't use brakes enough to clean them from forming rust), and a couple of lamps, and gave me so far no other trouble? Sell/replace a car that essentially looks and feels new?
I have tried to estimate the fuel savings with a Gen4 vs Gen3 based on my current statistics of average fuel consumption, average fuel price and I ended up with a net saving of 1800€ over 6 years... that is 300€ saved in fuel per year. I hardly recover any fix costs, let alone purchase price... ;)
So I am wondering and I ask to those fortunate here that have had already or will have soon the possibility to drive the new Gen4, what else is *really* good compared to the 3? what makes it really *worth* moving to a Gen4, considering that, even if I get 10k€ back (official estimate on my Gen3) from my current one, I need to dish out at least another 15k€ to buy a new one?
Yes, maybe I could lease it with 0€ down-payment, with 500k€ monthly payments (and ending up after 3 years and 18k€ later, with no car in my hands).
    So - what to do?
(the Prius Gen4 will be launched in Germany end of January, no official pricing, fuel consumption estimates (for what the EU ones currently are worth, I refer to the EPA ones - which are really meaningful), so all the above is based on the current prices of the Gen3, which I hope will be the same, or higher (!) than the Gen4 :) )

While I never sell perfectly good cars to buy newer cars, you may wish to try the new handling, to see if the is a killer feature for you.

Well, you are probably due for a new 12V battery. ;)
The improved handling, as mentioned above, may be attractive.
But, as with -any- vehicle, replacing it will be more expensive than keeping it running.
You do get better safety, better crash worthiness, less obsolete technology, neater "things" such as the radar cruise that works to 0 km/hr, pedestrian impact detection, etc.

It's really up to you. Will you -enjoy- the new features enough to think you "got your moneys worth". Only YOU can answer that.

if i were driving a 2010, i would upgrade for the more comfortable seats, better center console and quieter ride. that's enough for me to drop 20k.;)

Read around the forum, there are quite a few threads with similar questions, but yes, I heard it has improved in all directions and most in the driving quality.

If I were gonna upgrade, it'd be to a 2015, do not like the 2016 looks, the dash, the wheels, that half the levels are missing a spare and have instead an irregular hatch deck. Our 2010 might be our last car, for that matter.

You'll piss off the Volt, Hyundai, Leaf advocates, and the 2016 skeptics . . . schadenfreude.

In my case, getting TSS(P) in an Two Eco will meet my requirements.

I suspect the Gen 4 is targeting Gen 2 owners. Those would have their cars for nearly 12 years. The average new car age in the U.S. is 11.6 years so unless you're the type that likes the new generation every time it comes out, you may be holding on to your car until the Gen 5 comes out. OR a few of us are waiting for the Gen 2 PiP which buys us another year or two with our Gen 3s.

    To answer your question:

    • Latest in safety (body structure, crash protection and of course a car body that hasn't been stressed and twisted over 6 years. Recall also that in the U.S., there's the new small offset crash test that the 2010 didn't do too well)
    • Latest in tech - updated IPA, updated DRCC, updated PCS, different version of LKA (LDW w/ Steering Assist)
    • Better to drive with 4-wheel independent suspension with a rear double wishbone

11.6 years but how many owners? I believe most people hold on to there cars for less

I remember that I have read that in Europe average vehicle age was 5-11, depending on country. For Croatia it's 9 years. That would make aversge us car 5.8 years old. Feasible I guess.

    I would go for
    - better sound proofing
    - better handling

those two are main benefits for me, but I will wait a couple of years to see what next gen Auris will bring in Europe.

I have just found out that the Reverse still plays a useless and annoying beep *inside* the vehicle when engaged:

Let's just hope that you can turn that off at the dealer's. Because this is the most nonsense thing ever. And if you have rear parking sensors that beep too, you can literally go insane...

Thanks BTW for all your replies. I think I need to wait for the Germany pricing to come out, test drive it and then see what the dealer in Germany wants to offer me. I cannot lease the car because I am not a company or a professional. And financing it at 3% interest might not be the best solution, as it also requires me to get a more expensive Full-Kasko (I don't know what it is called in the USA) insurance.
The business case is extremely thin so far. And as I said, fuel savings alone don't bring much at all compared to my Gen3.

I know that Toyota has stated they are expecting to sell the same cars as last year, and they have reduced the outlook of Prius sold worldwide due to lower gas prices. So, if they want to see more Prius sold and the dealer doesn't show me he really wants to sell it, considering I don't really need a new car right now, I think I will stick to my Gen3 and see what happens in the overall Toyota line up. (e.g. like a new Auris, which is cheaper (and smaller) but currently offers a behind the wheel instrument cluster and no HUD, which for me are total deal breakers - in city traffic where I mostly drive, I need to see in front of me at all times - the Prius in this respect has helped me save a lot of possible accidents due to "Facebook Drivers" who don't really pay attention while driving.

So happy with my new Prius Plugin advanced model Gen 3. Many of the same features as the video above. Although "lane keep assist," "pedestrian monitoring" and "blind spot monitoring" would be an upgrade. I love the "radar cruise control" and use it every time I am on the freeway.

I like the look of the Gen 3 over 4. While looking at 4 does it remind you of a Hyundai? Maybe when I see it in person I will feel different. Initially not crazy about styling.

Definitely would be unhappy with the seats shown in the video. Like the two-tone softtex in my Gen 3 plugin advanced.

I also like the large navigation screen in the Gen 3 plugin advanced. Kind of "in your face" with the slant on the bridge. In the video on the Gen 4 the navigation screen appears extremely small. Would have to see it in person for a fair comparison in size.

Have not driven Gen 4, however, in the video driver seems to be going way faster than I would be driving. For me the Prius is a relaxed comfortable driving experience.

Definitely my Gen 3 is a big improvement over my Gen 2 model in so many ways. I thought about getting a Gen 4 model, however the best value for my dollar, there are some great deals now on low mileage Gen. 3 plugin advanced models.

@pakitt It is customisable at the dealer according to the owner's manual.

One internal beep when you put it into reverse. What's the problem?

The continuous internal beep is really distracting and in my view hazardous but if they kept it in the Gen 4, surely they wouldn't have been stupid enough to remove the option to reset for a single beep.

Also the dealership will adjust the reverse beep down to 1 beep.
