Merry Christmas! For some reason I thought tonight would be a good night to try to replace key fob battery. Turns out we didn't have the right size ones, then when my dad tried to put it back together after opening up, he cannot get the pieces to fit back together. They stack up too thick to pop the plastic back together. This rubber piece seems to be the culprit. It doesn't fit in to the grooves and doesn't match up with the little plastic nubs. Anyone else have trouble with this before? Or any advice on how I can get to work on Christmas Day? Of course my spare fob is at my apartment and I'm home with my family for the holiday. Thanks in advance!

I've replaced the batteries on both fobs for my 2 Toyota vehicles and didn't run into much difficulty getting it back together.

Have you tried searching for a video on YouTube that details disassembly and reassembly of the key fob?

The plastic spikes on the middle piece do not have any corresponding holes on the rubber piece, which seems to be the problem. Not sure if poking holes into the rubber would solve the problem.

OK, this is my Camry fob, but if your prius fob is similar it might help.

Look for the corner on the back of the front piece with the small hole. Now, insert the clear rubber piece with the small rubber nub in the underside of the corner in the hole.

Then insert the circuit board piece in the rubber tray with the battery side facing away from the nub/hole corner.

    Hope that helps!

Disregard!!! We've been placing it on the wrong side this whole time, of course. Holiday stress! Maybe someone will make this silly mistake in the future and come across this thread :)

lesson: do not full around with something you can't handle
The best full proof learning guide is, take pictures with a phone or camera as you go along with an unfamiliar task.

And the lesson luckily not learned, is DO NOT modify a perfectly designed FOB just to get it back together!

Always be careful to observe how something comes apart in order to put it back together correctly. Be slow and methodical. No modifications (e.g. "holes") are necessary.

My impression too, when I changed fob batteries: very fragile, finicky device.

the biggest problem with the fob is when your prying it apart. i think i will put an elastic around it next time.

also, when you go to snap it back together, it feels like something is binding, and you're afraid you're going to break it. but there's really nothing wrong.
