    Hello All!

I currently have been putting in time and cleaning up the interior of my 2007 Prius, I had one question that relates to both the speedometer, and the clock on the Prius. For some reason, while my speedometer is still easily visible, at has these little dots everywhere, I can't tell if these are nicks, or just stubborn stains of some type of liquid, this has existed since I purchased the car, was wondering if anyone can help me out here on how to possibly clean this off? It just nags me every time I drive, as it doesn't make a hindrance to viewing it, just annoying seeing those dots.

Secondly, the clock is just hazy. I have tried things from warm water to alcohol pads but no luck. This as well came with the car from the previous owner, I am not sure how to clean this off. It has a very weird feel to it when I touch it. Is there any way to fix this as well? This definitely does impact my viewing ability of the clock at times, and would love to see if there are any solutions to fixing it.

As always, I have attached images with this post!

    Happy Holidays!

toothpaste works at polishing up hazy spots. Just don't rub it in too much, once it clears up....leave it

You might try some Meguiar's Clear Plastic Polish on the clock. It does a great job of clearing up foggy plastic.

I would use a very, VERY small droplet, and just rub it in with a Kleenex or something basically? Also just out of curiosity, what exactly causes the plastic to go like that? I am assuming the idea is identical to how headlights faze?

If I may jump in? It looks like the OP's previous owner used something too abrasive to clean the clock. The headlight haze is from the plastic breaking down for the Sun's UV Rays. Two different causes, with similar results.

Ah gotcha, I just saw your comment in regards to the Meguiars polish, would this work: Meguiar's Plast-X Clear Plastic Cleaner and Polish - Walmart.com

If so, I can definitely get this product today!

Any comments on the speedometer by any chance?

Some of the speedo damage looks like it was caused by abrasives caught in the cleaning cloth. The speedo is a reflective image so gently clean the glass panel in the dash. I'd try the Plast-X after seeing what it does to the clock.

Should I go ahead and apply the Plast-X on the glass if it works for the clock in that case? It looks like the damage may be the glass more than that black panel

It really doesn't do much to glass. I haven't looked, but if the speedo is glass, you could try cleaning it with alcohol, just try not to get the alcohol on the plastic parts.

So, first off, HAPPY NEW YEAR!

I applied some PlastX yesterday and today, and here are my results thus far (major improvements on the clock!) Anyways, I wanted to share some pictures, and had some follow up questions:

    IMG_20160101_151549.jpg Burst_stack_116342383686778_3.jpg
    • Here, I applied the PlastX on my clock with a ear swab, and got these results. This is not bad! Especially comparing it to my original clock.
    • I am not too sure how much my speedo improved, but I applied some on the plastic part, as I am now 100% confident it is simply the plastic, and not the glass that is mirroring the speedometer.

    IMG_20160101_154133.jpg IMG_20160101_154151.jpg
    • I had some crazy idea to possibly rub my finger a bit on the clock, and boy, did that clean it up even more! I am assuming I can get almost all of that abrassed plastic erased if I use a proper material? BTW, my winter MPG's suck! Used to get ~53-51 MPG in the spring/summer :(
    • I want to say my speedo has improved, but not sure if that is even accurate. I am assuming I should use some better type of material to get it off?
Anyways, my remaining question now is: what kind of material should I use with the PlastX to get the clock and speedo? Somehow, using my finger resulted in drastic improvements versus just buffing it out with an ear swab.

Thanks for the help thus far!

Did you try cleaning it first? from the pictures now, it looks like the plastic has a build up of some sort it maybe dirt, wax or even excess Plastx.

I did indeed try cleaning it first, but that never did anything rather than making it look stubborn. I had cleaned from warm water, to alcohol pads to literally using some Invisible Glass and hoping that may do the trick, but that never worked.

What do you recommend for cleaning it if that is the case? I think the application of PlastX did the job on the clock, just doesn't look completely done due to the shape, and how far I am able to "buff" it all out, which is why I was asking for what kind of material I should use instead to make it really work.

I haven't had a situation to have to fix exactly what you have, but I have fixed several plastic headlights by using 3000 to 5000 sandpaper 5000 is very hard to find. I have done headlights that were so bad I had to start with 800 grit and move down to the 3000 to 5000 grit. Then using the plastic polish after that. My concern is the room you have, (dash in the way) and I am not sure how soft the clock plastic is. You might cutting some micro fiber and wrapping it a round the qtip and try to buff out the corners with more of the Plastx. I am not sure the qtip is abrasive enough on its own and paper towels are too course. Sorry I can't give you a definite answer.
