Yesterday I had the front tires replaced. Now when I reach 55 MPH the Slip Indicator Light comes on. As soon as I drop down below 55 MPH the light goes off.
The new tires on the front are 185/60R14. The tires on the rear are 185/65R14. The owner's manual specifies 185/65R14. Would the difference in sizes between the front and the rear cause the light to come on?

    Hi BGJB,

Yes, you need to have the same size tires on all four positons. Many times this means the same brand and size of tire. As some brands have different revs/mile than other brands in the same size. If your tires do not have the same revs/mile, then at some speed the difference in revs/sec that occurs, will trigger the slip light. Its programmed to accept some small difference in revs/sec. As you go faster and faster, the rev/sec of a smaller tire will get more and more compared to a bigger tire.

I am curious why you have R14 tires on the 2007 Prius? The rims are 15 inch. The Owner's manual specifies the 185/65R15 tires. Or is your post simply a typo in this regard?

Sorry, was a typo. I checked the sizes early this morning and wasn't wide awake yet when I submitted the post. Not sure why the tire place put the 60's on the front. I'll take care of that on Monday when they open again.

I'm sorry to hear about your experience, but, on the bright side, I'm glad you shared your story because I learned something new this morning. :D

    1. Check all four tires to make sure they are the same size. What is the size installed on your car?
    2. Check the tire inflation on all four tires. Use at least 35/33 psi front/rear. I use 44/42 psi front/rear.
    3. Check the tire tread depth on all four tires. If there are large differences between tread depth that may be an issue.

Thanks a lot man! The tires are radius 15 and the air pressure is 30 psi. Do you think that's the problem? I will check this out, also is this a very Big issue?

Yes, you need to figure out the root cause of the problem. You may be causing excessive wear to the transaxle if the problem is with one of the front tires, for example.

You need to use the same size tires on all 4 corners. This will illuminate the light since it sees the difference as slippage. All four wheels have speed sensors.

Beyond the "radius 15" (should actually be diameter 15") you need to verify the size labels embossed on the tires are the same. Look for label such as 175/65R15 (stock size) for example.

Also, 30 psi is quite low, 35 psi front and 33 psi rear is the specified pressure in the Owner's Manual
