They might come out. I think it typically involves a guy with a laptop and cable, if it's purely the software.

yes, it's very possible triple a made a mistake. prius 12 volts are finicky. the only way to find out is put a digital volt meter on it, while cold.

you don't want it to say 'good', you want it to say 12.5 volts or better. and at the jump point under the hood, after the car has been off for a few hours. at the battery is okay, but the hatch turns some lights on.

Doesn't driving a Prius with no gas and then on EV until it is depleted destroy the hybrid battery?

    That was my understanding.

I think more so with second gen, third gen is better protected against this? Not sureA cheap first step would be to try adding a bit more gas. There's some minimum amount, (bisco mentioned, think 3 gallons) and if you don't add that amount it remains dead.

You can't -normally- damage the HV battery by running it out of gas, GII or GIII. The system won't let you discharge it too much. By the posted picture, the HV battery looks fine.
If the AAA guy disconnected the 12V battery in the hatch for five minutes or so, or for a minute and applied the brake pedal, then that should reset the computers. There is no "unplug the battery". You have to remove a bolt. Best to remove the negative lead, either from the battery or the chassis and do the above (5 min, or 1 min and apply the brake pedal to turn on the brake lamps to discharge the 12 power from the system). Do remember to get it back into "ready" you need to press the brake pedal when you press "start" (once the battery is connected again).
I understand the GIII can cause problems when you run out of fuel. But the above should fix it. If not, then the dealer it is! Maybe they will come out to help you.

at this point I would try some basics..
are you sure you are pressing the brake pedal all the way down?
are you pressing the power button more then once?
is the car going into ACC (is the radio working when on?)

if you have a battery charger hook it to the battery while trying to start it, if the 12 volt battery is low this will bring it up to proper voltage to start the car
this is a long shot but check the orange safety plug on the main battery if its has become dislodged the car will not go into ready mode.

watch a youtube video on how to remove it and put it back in and lock it in place..

Think I figured it out. The AAA guy "unplugged" the traction battery service plug. This does nothing to reset anything.
But we haven't heard from the OP. Hope they figured it out.

Thanks for all the feedback... I've tried again to undo the negative side of the 12v battery when the car is "cold" and wait 10 minutes, but that didn't work. I'm at the point of getting it towed 20 miles to the mechanic but if I could avoid that, or at least know what needs to be done that would be amazing.

I think it's gonna need that tow. They won't come out I guess?

Well, it's possible that if the AAA guy did unplug the traction battery service plug, he didn't get it properly reseated when he plugged it back in. It's kind of a two step effort, plug in, then snap into place. This is very common when people pull that plug.

Absolutely rule out the HV service plug before towing. Just follow this video demo.

I had it towed to my mechanic. He used the computer to clear the codes, but found that the "power control module" needs to be replaced. I guess it has something to do with the inverter and he seems to think it's covered under warranty recall but Toyota says there's no recall on the inverter. Any info on this? It's a 2011 Prius.

i think there was a recall on the ipm module inside the inverter. there are several threads here.
