As you may know, the Tire Pressure Monitoring System is battery-based so they only last 8-10 years. I am curious what we've seen as the longest lasting. My door panel says mfg date July-2006 so I am at 9.5 years. Don't know if 2005/2004 Gen2 had TPMS too.

Nope my dash light is flashing. I am wondering if it makes sense to replace only one...if I thought they could last 12 years maybe

My TPMS are original (then again so is my 12v battery). We bought ours in early 2007 so I imagine the Prius was built in the later half of 2006. Just got new tires this summer and I didn't bother changing out the TPMS as even if they go bad I figure I can check my own air pressure until the next time tires are due.

Why wouldn't you just pay the few extra bucks to have your TPMS rebuilt when you are getting new tires? Costco did mine for $15 a tire when I get my new Michelin's.

Not a COSTCO member is one reason, the other reason I did not really know we had sealed button battery system until it failed recently. $15/tire is incredible cheapest I've seen on Amazon is about $30 and that does not seem reliable.

Almost worth the membership just get the tires/gas :) If you don't want to pay for membership you can buy their cash cards online with a credit card and they work just like a membership without the annual fee.

Thanks I am actually planning on doing that but I was going to have a relative buy it for me...didn't realize I could do it.

That "rebuild" is purely the replacement of an O-ring or two; does nothing to improve the longevity of your TPMS sensor's battery.

Agree with the above, when Costco or whomever "rebuilds" your TPMS they are just changing out some of the rubber o-rings and the valve head (a few bucks worth of parts) that does not extended the life of the TPMS itself unless you think it got debris inside for some reason. The batteries on the TPMS themselves are sealed in the electronic portion of the unit and that is where the more costly replacement comes in.

They did not. My 2007 still has the original TPMS system operational, the build date probably was in late 2006.

For anyone with long-in-the-tooth sensors: when getting new tires, did you get "rebuild kits" done by the tire dealer, or not? If you did, or didn't, any problems?

I've changed my tires twice and never rebuilt, TPMS sensors still work fine

85K miles on 2007, installed two sets of tires so far. I did not rebuild the sensors, and there are no problems as of this writing.

If it was me of course, I'd use the "black tape over the light" approach, but my wife insists on complete fix. However, at the moment I have covered the light and I am waiting to see if my better half notices.

I use the "do nothing" approach. Our snow tires don't have tpms, little orange light comes on. Come spring OEM tires go back on, light goes out.

The black data panel inside the driver's door frame on our 2006 model Prius has "03/06" at the upper right hand corner, and we picked it up at the dealer in spring 2006. It is on just the second set of tires, and I declined the offered "refurb" on the TPMS at that time.

It did generate a TPMS alert this fall, and at the time I suspected battery failure, but it turned out that I had not done the monthly tire pressure check for a couple of months, the weather had turned colder--lowering the actual pressure, and I had some years previously raised the alarm point deliberately (by temporarily putting a little more pressure in than my intended operating point and doing the detection point procedure, intending that detection be 25% below 43 or 44 instead of 25% below the 38 where I run it. The lowest tire read about 33 at the time of my alarm, and I've seen no further alerts.

I looked around for credible reports of end-of-life failure at the time, and found lots of assertions of the intended/claimed life, but nothing that looked like systematic actual bulk population end-of-life failure reporting by actual users. I think perhaps the first generation sensors Toyota shipped in the Prius have real-world typical life somewhat longer than ten years, as I'd expect this site to get some active traffic on the topic once it starts happening in big numbers.

I have seen claims that the sensor battery consumption is partly usage dependent, so it may be relevant that our Prius has only 55155 miles on the odometer. Also it is garaged, so sees temperatures outside the 45 to 90 range for only a small percentage of the time.

Worked perfectly on a 2006 Prius. The tire shop had no problems configuring the sensors to work with the car. Finally the TPMS warning light is off! The original sensors lasted approximately 10 years & 125k miles.
