I like The Cure, but my wife is the big fan with Cure vanity plates (not on the prius). I like too many bands and styles of music to single out one, but Disintegration is still in my top ten. I like keyboard heavy Cure so no other album can compare.

The Beatles and Green Day. Both made social and political commentary---Revolution (Beatles) and American Idiot/Holiday (Green Day), among others.......many others.......

Being a former Jersey guy, I don't know how I could have omitted The Boss from my list! And speaking of the Band, Levon Helm is said to put on these incredible house concerts (with all sorts of guest musicians) at his studio in Woodstock, NY- I hope to make it up there for one!

anyone ever check out the online radio called www.pandora.com ?

you type in the name of a group you like and they create a custom radio station with that group and others in the same genre. You can make lots of customized stations....

I just made another station based on "The Band".....1st song they played was "The W.S. Walcott Medicine Show".

How Cool, thanks for the reference.
I plugged in Rush--song #1 was Dreamline--great typical Rush characteristic song but not one that really got much radio play and would but unknown to all but a Rush fan.

Second was Barclay James Harvest--neat sound with some similarities to Rush but still distictive--had never heard of them/him

Third was Fuel--heard of them, never listened to them before but enjoyed the song that was played.

Forth was Guided by Voices doing a song completely different than anything I'd heard from them on the radio...frankly I never gave them a second though after some of the poppy radio stuff. Maybe I need to reconsider.

Now playing another Rush--Scars from Presto--definately not one of their big hits...a fringe song but one I truely love.

What an intriquing effort this is.

Ok, for TRUE death metal (I thought about it, and I agree Trevor, Liabach doesn't really belong in the death metal category!) category, who else but...

    ...CANNIBAL CORPSE!

How can you go wrong with a group that calls their fan club, the MAGGOT colony?

    Best song: "Meat hook sodomy"

It's impossible to come up with one band/artist. Many artists have influenced my musical taste over the years. I should say too many

I've never had a fascination for a particular artist/band, as there are so many.

Classic Rock/Pop: THE BEATLES, the Rolling Stones, the Doors, Velvet Underground, Bob Dylan, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Jimi Hendrix, Bob Marley, David Bowie...

Punk/Indie: the Smiths, the Clash, Joy Division, Killing Joke, the Jam, Sex Pistols, Theatre of Hate, The The aka Matt Johnson, Cocteau Twins...

Jazz: Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughn, Oscar Peterson, Lester Young, Charlie Parker, Weather Report...

Swing/Big Band: Count Basie, Gil Evans...

Soul: James Brown, Percy Sledge, Sam Cooke...

Blues: Bessie Smith, T-Bone Walker, B.B. King...

    Noise: Einstürzende Neubauten, Merzbow...

Industrial: Esplendor Geometrico, Front 242, Throbbing Gristle...

IDM: Autechre, Aphex Twin, Black Dog, Boards of Canada, Luomo, Murcof...

Dub: King Tubby, Bill Laswell, Adrian Sherwood, Mad Professor...

    this may take forever...

    :)

Late to the dance as usual, my nominees are:

    Mark Knopfler

Allison Kraus/US (not a rocker, but still great)

Diana Krall (another non-rocker, but great)

    Tom Waits (especially earlier work)

    But mostly Mark Knopfler.

Amazing guitarist. Have you heard his new work with Emmylou Harris? Great stuff.
