I'm looking to buy a 2008 Prius and found that the HIDs are crazy-expensive to have fixed if they go out. If I come across a good deal on a Prius and it has HIDs, I'd like to get it, but only if I can change out the HID headlights with the standard headlights.

    Is that possible?

If so, how expensive is it?

    Thanks!

    Thanks.

I've seen where several Prius owners have had to pay around $2,000 to have their HIDs fixed. There's some weird issue with them that effects a pretty decent percentage of the second gen models. If I get a second gen with HIDs, I'll just replace them with halogens if the module breaks. That's a reasonably cheap solution.

Cephyr13, I don't think the HID to non-HID is quite that simply. I looked into doing this last winter after my wife slayed a deer with the PRI, requiring a new headlight to be purchased. From my limited research it can be done but there are wiring differences between the HID and non HID wiring looms. There was a hybrid shop in South Dakota that had the electrical work around from HID to non-HID as I recall. I needed to return our PRI to service as quick as possible after the accident so I didn't chase this idea any further at the time.

Interesting. Good to know. That's what I figured since no one had talked about using this as a workaround to replacing the HID module or headlights. Thanks.

Yup, otherwise I bet factory HIDs would be a rarity as these vehicle age. Again this is a doable conversion it's just not a plug-n-play conversion like so many others.
