2012 Prius v (lowercase v)...brakes failed tonight

    The "Pressed the brake pedal fully to the floor" in the original post would seem harder to do with the footrest, since the footrest doesn't move.

    I have no idea why you would come up with your statement from my posting.

    My experience writing OSs and maintaining them was with machine language or assembly language and the code where the software interacts with the hardware. I wasn't talking to software people but to hardware designers. Where I have assisted hardware fixers at the oscilloscope level debugging of the hardware pinpointing a single hardware instruction failure deep within a compiler.

    My product management experience was with C language OSs with embedded assembly language at the most critical points needing optimization.

    And my only point in my quoted posting was to point out how difficult it is to code at the level we are demanding of the embedded systems within our cars. Anyone can be a critic, but to produce something that actually gets used is really really difficult.

    We were just talking about BASIC and machine language calls...we aren't out there calling anyone to correct our opinions as this is a forum on cars. Sure people do go to tangents but even if your a rocket scientist no one really cares about if we make
    admissions to some aspect of automotive engineering (in this case software) which was probably not entirely correct.
    But anyways..I'm always ready for situations like this which come out OUT of the blue. If you expected total factual info then this is not the place for it...Remember this is the Internet and it is ALWAYS WYSIWYG.

    Just an update to this, Transport Canada is investigating and has pulled off the data from the EDR... I should know what happened in a couple of weeks. They are doing a full mechanical inspection this week so I should be able to get my car back soon... just need to drive 4 hours to get it.

    So I got my car back this past weekend. Transport Canada as well as Toyota and the body shop all investigated and have come to the conclusion that nothing out of the ordinary happened. From what they can deduce, the car experienced a slip condition which triggered the VSC system. They said the feeling of no brakes can be attributed to sliding on a slippery surface. At this point I have nothing to refute them, so I have taken this as a life lesson and leave even more room when travelling behind anyone.

    I've driven the car for the past few days on *very* slippery roads in -30 Celsius weather and have yet to encounter something similar as to the situation before... so I don't know. I am at a loss I suppose. After the repair the car does seem to drive a lot better (they replaced all suspension components in the front end, as well as new brakes all around).

    Glad things are looking better.

    Slippery road possibilities demand the very best tires as they are your only means of contact with the surface you are riding on. Totaled a Porsche because I didn't pay attention to that. It was November and I didn't realize there was a freeze overnight. Slammed on the brakes and nothing happened except a slippery slide into a stopped truck. Summer tires.

    So don't depend on even all-season tires. Get the best winter tires you can for the climate you are in.

    Funny thing was, I do have great winter tires, and at the time the weather was just at freezing (0 degrees C). Either way I suppose I will just have to take this as a learning experience.

    Been driving in heavy snow and ice the last few days and the ABS did kick in (felt like no brakes) when slipping on ice, but the skid icon did not illuminate like what happened before. So unsure if that light meant something else? I know it comes on when you are trying to accelerate on slippery roads.
