Ok, who's gotten a speeding ticket in their '04 Prius?

Sigh. Does my wife have the dubious distinction of being the first (only) reader of this site to receive a speeding ticket in their '04 Prius?

About a week ago she calls me at work and casually mentions she got a speeding ticket in our '04 Prius. She was on a six-lane, limited-access arterial where the posted limit is 45mph, but everyone drives 60mph. The cop clocked her at 67mph but wrote her up for 55. I was quite angry :x when I heard this, but she told me there were no other cars around because she had left everyone far behind at the last light. I wasn't sure if I should be relieved, or angrier. She's actually a pretty good driver, and has a CDL (commercial driver's license), which demands careful driving since many infractions are charged double points if you have a CDL.

No joke, the officer actually said, "Gee, I didn't know these cars could go that fast."

Sorry, but LOL. I'm still waiting for my Prius to arrive, so I haven't gotten any speeding tickets in a Prius yet.

The probability of getting a speeding ticket in a Prius is as high or as low as in any other car, if you drive it like you drive other cars. If you drive the Prius for fuel economy you're less likely to get a ticket.

Still the speed limits of some roads are way too low for today's cars, so you may be speeding but still driving safely.

I'd be mad too, he should have written her up for the full 67. 22 mph over the limit is a bit extreme. At least she did do one good thing, she educated the officer regarding the car :) One does have to wonder why a limited access road isn't posted highr than 45 though. Isn't that the purpose of 'limited access' - to allow faster travel by reducing the inherent danger of merges?

My wife got one in my Prius one of the rare times she's driven it about a month ago...65 in a 55--that'll happen, BTW, if you try to pass a State Trooper!!

i have to say that i have had several people ask some question like 'is it fast enough to drive on the highway' or 'what's the top speed?' (the look on their faces when i tell them it's hardware limited to 106 MPH is priceless!)

i drove home all the way from WV at 76 mph... luckily this is not considered that bad on interstates where the limit is 65-70...

I had made a posting on another board dealing with alternative fuels where someone was critical of hybrid's speed. I indicated that the Prius was fast enough to get a guy in a uniform to stop you to give you a piece of paper. He never responded.

I'd assume that the probability of a ticket in a Prius would generally be lower than for other cars. Granted, if you're flying down the road +20 mph faster than the next fastest car, you're going to stick out no matter what kind of car you drive.

But I'd always assumed that officers had basic assumptions built into their subconscious, like sports car = fast! and Prius = slow! Isn't a red sports car very (relatively) likely to be ticketed?

That's perfectly understandable, racing to get the new car before someone else glommed onto it.

I was pulled over at 81 mph but the cop just wanted to check out the car I guess because no ticket. He said he couldn't see the dealer tag in the rear window. He followed me for two miles after whipping around before hitting his lights.

Twice I had police officers pulled along side and yell out the window questions about how I like my Prius. Each time I offered to let them drive mine. One officer took me up on my offer.

Yeah, now I only wish I could have convinced the officer!

I explained the situation but, as per usual around here, he couldn't have cared less. OTOH, again as per usual around here, he probably won't show up on the court date. :D

Anyway, YES, 100% of my body weight on that day was paranoia! I was running late and was absolutely convinced there was less than a 50% chance of my car being there when I arrived.

I was pulled over but didn't get a ticket. I was convinced he just wanted a closer look at the car. And anyway what is a campus cop doing straying away from the college campus?

yes I was also caught driving in town 59 km/h where the speed limit is 50, late evening on an empty dual road but with an automatic camera recording at irregular intervals...
and I afraid another one is coming as I saw again a flash in the rear mirror.
Most irritating is that you can prevent it by using the cruise control all the time ...but in town I usually don't bother

When I first got my Prius I had a really hard time staying under the speed limit. The car is so smooth and quiet, and accelerates with so much gentle power, that you don't even notice how quickly you reach the speed limit.

BTW, you don't need power to get a speeding ticket. Both my speeding tickets (in 30 years of driving) were in my old Civic. One on a stretch of country road with only 2 cars within 5 miles (mine and the cop's) and the other on an unfamiliar piece of road where the limit dropped from 40 to 25 about 4 blocks before the road narrowed from a commercial district to residential.

No excuses. Both times I wasn't paying attention.

Just drive the speed limit - you'll save fuel/$$ and you won't get tickets for speeding. I know it's hard, I use to drive 80 everywhere I went (IS300) but it has been worth it to just go the speed limit.

I haven't gotten a ticket, but I can tell you it is very hard to go the speed limit on the freeways here in Southern California. I set the cruise control to 65 on the way home from San Diego today and was getting cut in front of a lot. Most people simply do not want to do the speed limit. It wasn't a problem on about half of the trip because the traffic was so bad.

On the way to work on side streets, going 35 is almost impossible. Most people go at least 45. I get cut off on a regular basis going 40.
