Looking into a 3rd Gen, currently got a 2nd Gen

    Hey guys would love to know the difference and why I should go with 3rd Gen. The looks are starting to grow on me. I also notice that the 2nd Gen on google gets 60/51 which is 10 mpg better than the 3rd? Why?

    Google is showing you the original EPA ratings for the Gen2. The ratings were changed in 2008 (lowered to be more realistic), the new ratings put the Gen3 at 3MPG higher than the Gen2. Gen3 should get better mileage in almost any situation.

    FWIW, if you do get a Gen III, try to get one with 15" Rims. The 15's seem to get better MPG than the 17" alternative.

    Just sayin based on personal experience and comparison with other Pri on Fuelly and also here on PC.

    If there isn't anything wrong with your Gen2 then trading up to a Gen3 is just going to be an additional expense. To get everything in your Touring you will need to find a Five with Advanced Tech package and that car will have 17" wheels.

    Through 2009 my 2006 was the best car I had. The 2010 is a bit better and it cost a lot a more.

    Or you could look into the Gen 4 since it finally came out!

    it's not a big difference, so i would be cautious dropping too much money on a trade. test drive one for yourself. if you do switch, make sure you're only paying for lower miles/age.

    I just looked at a comparo on our local review site, TheFastLaneCar. They preferred the 3rd gen a lot, and found it to be more fuel efficient as well.

    I also like the more technical comparison performed by a hypermiler that is linked, lower in that item:

    Reading those two items almost made me interested in the Gen 3, but I do a fair bit of mud, snow and poor roads and I don't think the Gen 3 would be as offroadabile, with the lower ground clearance and more distance between the wheels. For staying on the pavement, a Gen 3 is probably really nice, though, I admit, by the sound of it.

    I didn't find the early EPA guideline numbers to be too far off. I've never gotten the '07 down to its new-guideline numbers--it must just not be thirsty enough.
