I just had new speakers and an amp installed (in a non-JBL system) about 5 months ago. All was great until about 2 weeks ago when I noticed that I was getting static through the speakers. It doesn't matter whether it's the radio, CD, or Aux and it doesn't matter whether the volume is turned down to zero, I still get this annoying static.

Does anyone know what this could be? I'd really appreciate your thoughts.

Did anything else happen coincindent with the start of the static? Any new components installed? Dealer service? etc?

That would seem to indicate that the noise is being injected after the preamp stage... is it always the same volume regardless of the volume you have the radio set to? Do you still get the static when the Priius is off?

    Mike,

Nothing else happened after the install.

The static is the same volume regardless of the radio volume. I think that the static only happens when I shift into drive. When in park, I don't think it's a problem, but I'm not absolutely sure.

    Ken -

So no static with the engine off? Sounds like maybe a ground wire to your radio is not connected well. First thing I would do is see if any of the wires are loose. If not and the radio is still under warranty (and hopefully the installation) I would take it back to the shop that installed it (could be a problem internal to the radioi as well). Good luck!

Mike has the right idea, take it to where you had it installed. It sounds like a ground wire has become disconnected and that would cause static at all volumes.

Does your amplifier have speaker level inputs or line-level (RCA jack) type inputs?
If your amp install is like mine, they had to use a line level converter to take the speaker
wire outputs (from the factory radio) and convert them to the RCA Jack type in order to
feed signal into your amp. Check connections at the line out converter if you have one.
Mine actually had a ground wire that I had to tap to ground.

If the noise is coming from all input sources and doesn't vary with input volume, then I'd say
you might be having an issue with something shorting or interfearig with your RCA cables.

If you have them, check your RCA cables (& the jacks at both ends). Make sure the jacks are
securely plugged in and that the cables aren't pinched or cut into anywhere along their route.

If you're not confident troubleshooting these things yourself, the shop who installed it should definately be able (& willing) to help.

    Good Luck!
