Hello, love my Prius, approaching first service and I have questions: do I need oil change? (is reg 10-40 advised?), tune up (plugs? timing?), air filter replaced? You know, what one would do with a 'normal' vehicle.

My thanks in advance, and by the way, I love the car.

congrats! oil and filter change are every 10,000 miles. use toyota or equivalent synthetic alternative. 0w-20 i think, it's on the oil cap and in your manual.

tyre rotation every 5,000 miles, along with multipoint inspection and fluid check/top up. common items like tyres need inspection, and balancing or alignment as necessary.

air and cabin filters are inspected replaced very 15,000 miles. nothing else is needed until post 100k when you will get into plugs, fluid changes and etc. it's all in your manual.

if you plan to keep your car for more tha 150,000 miles, many here recommend changing the tranny fluid early and often. toyota calls it lifetime, but some here have had it tested and feel there are too many contaminants.

some also like to lube the rear brake pad slide pins every so often.

    all the best!(y)

First service is a bit vague. Is this a 5k or 10k oil change and tire rotation? On a 2013? Or is it a major service interval service in which case the needs will be spelled out in your owner's manual and the dealer will try to sell you on the need for lots of other stuff. Be prepared for the upsell by reading the manual so you know what the difference is between what Toyota says and what the dealer says.

Generally, you want what the manual says, not what the dealer may try to upsale you.

One additional item I do encourage is an ATF WS drain and fill at 30,000 miles, then 90,000 miles , then every 90,000 miles. Toyota has no service interval for Automatic Transmision Fluid at all, which seems unlikely.

Reality is the manual, the dealers suggested services beyond that are profit centers for the dealership.

What's sad is how some service departments can be SO disconnected from the Toyota schedule. It's the same story with other manufacturers. I'd be curious what it's like in other countries, Japan for example.

What sort of oil does one use in a Prius, regular 10-40?

OW-20 is the norm in North America, it's indicated in the Owner's Manual, and printed on the oil filler cap.

You say you've got 20K miles on your car? You should still be covered by Toyota's scheduled maintenance plan for this service. Just take your car to a dealer and let them do it.

0W20 SYNTHETIC oil. And the oil filter, of course. It costs more, but lasts 10,000 miles between changes. Mobile One is an excellent choice. 5.5 quarts, I think. But your mileage still qualifies you for free oil changes by the dealer.

I'm partial to Toyota 0W20, the price for me is really good. Just switched over to bulk purchase, mainly to keep bottles out of the recycle stream.

I think its 4.4 to 4.5 quarts for the amount of oil.

Yes, 4.2 liter, or 4.5 quart, with filter change, to put the oil on top mark (which I typically do). I have a single liter bottle of oil as well, to bring it up to 4.2 liter. And a nice one liter graduated pitcher.

(One of those bottles is slated for our son's Civic. The Toyota 0W20 is just the best deal going for us.)
