Husky Weatherbeater Mats Interfere with My Gas Pedal

    I'm really baffled by this, since I read thread after thread of praise for the Husky WB mats. But I noticed it as soon as I drove my car the first time after installing them. It would barely go up the hill I live at the bottom of.. and then I realized I was unable to depress the gas pedal more than half way with these mats installed! For the record, I ordered the 98921 from amazon. On the box, it said 2012-2014 Prius, which was a concern since I have the 2011. However, the part number for 2010-2012 from Husky is the exact same. So I assume that the two mat sets are identical. Here's a quick video I made showing the problem:



    Has anyone else had this issue with husky mats?
    Perhaps I do need the ones that specifically say 2010-2012 even though they are the same part number from Husky.

    are you putting them on top of original mats? there's a huge distance from the floor to the bottom of the go pedal. mats would have to be like 2" thick.

    Nope, old mats are removed. You're right that there's a huge space that the gas pedal has to travel. The issue is that the indentation for where the mat goes under the gas pedal isn't deep enough to allow the gas pedal to get pushed far enough. It was hugely noticeable while driving, as I detailed above. I've got a call in to Husky's and an engineer is supposed to get back to me soon.

    They don't hook into place like the original mats? Seems like they should be able to hook into place. Were there instructions that came with them?

    I would consider using a hair dryer or heat gun to soften the plastic, then push down with the pedal to deform the mat enough to allow the desired travel.

    They have a spiky bottom that grips the carpet- no spot for hooks. The included instructions say to remove the hooks so that the mats can sit flush on the carpet, which I did.

    Interesting.
    I've never heard of anyone having this complaint before.
    But you've got the video so my eye's can't be lying.

    I guess it's simple measurements and spacial reality.
    How thick is the mat in that area? Does it appear thicker?
    Yes, obviously you don't want to be installing on top of anything else.

    I've got "Weathertech" and they protect under the pedal, but there is plenty of clearance.

    I just can't tell if it's more a problem with the Mat...or somehow your pedal is out of adjustment.

    PS.

    Safety is the biggest issue here. So if that means returning the mats? I'd do it.
    But I also might want the service department to look at my gas pedal.
    You SHOULD be able to have and use a custom fit mat. The way it looks in your video, you couldn't have any mat, form fitting or otherwise that offered any protection under the accelerator pedal.

    Maybe the mats are the wrong ones miss packaged in the wrong box. If theres a mold number or some kind of identifier on the mat itself that is the info you need to tell Husky about.

    Until you get this resolved - Don't use those mats for the time being.

    UPDATE: I think I figured it out. The part that went under the gas pedal was basically popped inside out towards the gas pedal rather than in towards the carpet. I popped it back in, and while the gas pedal still makes contact if you absolutely floor it, it seems that it's letting the pedal go down far enough to actually 'floor' the car.

    That seems dangerous.
    Wonder how it could of got popped inside out?

    I'd still want comparison to another Prius....
    and I'm paranoid enough I might want a service department to make sure it's OK.

    Did you buy the vehicle used? Because I'd be worried how that piece got turned around. Don't think the gas pedal is designed to have any part of it pop out and restrict movement.

    Toyota especially I'd think would be very attentive to that reality.

    It's not the piece on the gas pedal that was inside out, it was the flap on the Husky Weatherbeater mat that goes underneath the gas pedal. It is supposed to curve towards the carpet but on my mat (maybe due to shipping) was popped outward. I just pushed it back in and as I said above, everything is fine.

    Yes, I did buy the vehicle used, but it came with the original factory mats. I also had the car fully inspected by my local toyota dealership prior to purchase (from a private party).

    It's the mat that had the section popped inside out, not the gas pedal. There's nothing for Toyota service techs to look at. ;)

    Sorry, total failure of reading comprehension skills on my behalf.
    When you said "part that went underneath the gas pedal" I was looking at the part actually attached underneath the gas pedal.
    From the video I couldn't tell anything was popped out on the mat.

    But my bad.- Should of read more carefully.

    On the positive side...WIN...easy fix!

    still sounds dangerous. i'd take it out. if the pedal makes contact when you floor it, that's a potential death wish.

    Why do you say so? There's nothing down there that can get the gas pedal stuck down. It basically sits right at the same level as the existing carpeting.

    see my edit, it just doesn't sound right. it should not be making contact at any point. not even close, in case things shift.
